Exciting New Character Joins John Stewart in Upcoming Lanterns Series!

As I continue to learn about the cast for the Green Lantern-centric series Lanterns, my anticipation grows stronger. Of special note is the fact that this upcoming DC TV show will at last bring John Stewart into live action, a character whose fame soared in the 2000s due to his appearances in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, two of the greatest animated series ever produced. Aaron Pierre has been chosen to portray John in Lanterns, alongside Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, and another vital figure in his life whose inclusion in the show makes me even more eager to see how this DC Universe production develops John’s character.

After approximately two weeks since it was disclosed that Nicole Ari Parker is portraying John Stewart’s mother Bernadette, we now have information about who will be playing his father. Interestingly, we know of two different actors who will be depicting him in separate time periods. Initially, Deadline announced that J. Alphonse Nicholson from the series P-Valley will portray the younger John Sr., and subsequently, Deadline revealed that Sherman Augustus, known for his role in Stranger Things, will play the present-day version of John Stewart’s father.

In the story “Lanterns,” Augustus’ portrayal of the younger John Sr. is depicted as a person who stubbornly clings to the past and contemplates what might have been, serving as an intriguing contrast to Bernadette, who is both formidable and relentless. She refuses to surrender and has dedicated her life to securing a future for herself and her family that will not be overlooked. This suggests that while Bernadette tirelessly works towards progress in the present era of “Lanterns,” John Sr.’s inability to move forward may be due to unresolved issues from earlier times, which necessitates Nicholson’s portrayal of a younger version of the character.

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to learn that the series “Lanterns” intends to delve deeply into the life of John Stewart beyond his role as Green Lantern. Admittedly, I find myself curious about the reasoning behind this focus, given that the storyline revolves around John and Hal investigating a murder in Nebraska, which seems unrelated to John’s personal history. However, I can’t help but notice the inclusion of characters like Kelly Macdonald’s Kerry, Garret Dillahunt’s William Macon, who some speculate could be Black Hand, and Ulrich Thomsen’s Sinestro in this plot. It leaves me wondering how John’s parents might fit into this intricate web of characters.

It’s plausible that Aaron Pierre’s character, John Stewart, hails from this Nebraska town in the storyline. This could be why Bernadette and John Sr. play significant roles, as opposed to us merely visiting them in another part of the U.S., which wouldn’t fit coherently within the narrative. I can already imagine a complex father-son dynamic between John and his father, but I’d expect their relationship to evolve positively by the end of this season of Lanterns.

We’ll find out what the show “Lanterns” has in store for John Sr., when it airs on HBO around early 2026. But, you don’t have to wait that long to catch a Green Lantern in action within the DC Universe, as Nathan Fillion will portray Guy Gardner in “Superman”, due in theaters on July 11.
