As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but reminisce about the timeless cinematic masterpieces that have left an indelible mark on us fans. Among these, none has sparked more fervent anticipation for a sequel than the 2009 gem, “Jennifer’s Body.” Despite a disappointing marketing strategy that hindered its box office performance initially, it eventually found its footing as a cult classic, with viewers gradually appreciating the visionary storytelling of writer Diablo Cody.
Now, in the years since its release, whispers of a sequel have occasionally surfaced, but the latest hint suggesting that the follow-up is indeed in development comes from one of the film’s leading ladies, Amanda Seyfried herself.
During a screening of her movie “Seven Veils” in Toronto, Seyfried was asked about a possible sequel to “Jennifer’s Body”. In response, she expressed optimism but didn’t exactly confirm it, stating, “I think we’re making another one. I didn’t say that for sure! I said, ‘I think.'” Following this with a playful wink towards the camera, Seyfried ended by saying, “We’re in the process of developing it.
‘Jennifer’s Body’ Was Poorly Marketed By the Studio
Under the guidance of director Karyn Kusama and scriptwriter Cody, the movie titled “ Jennifer’s Body ” unfolds a chilling tale about Jennifer Check (Megan Fox), a high school student who gets demonically possessed. As a result, she is compelled to slaughter her male classmates and feed on their flesh for sustenance. In stark contrast to Jennifer, her insecure friend Anita “Needy” Lesnicki, played by Amanda Seyfried, remains close despite the two not sharing many similarities. Alongside Fox and Seyfried, the film boasts performances from Johnny Simmons, J.K. Simmons, Amy Sedaris, and Adam Brody.
As a film critic, I found myself intrigued by 20th Century Fox’s confidence in “Jennifer’s Body,” premiering it at the Toronto International Film Festival. However, it seemed to me that those associated with the movie were somewhat uncertain about how to market it effectively. The challenge, as I saw it, was that horror-comedy films are a trickier proposition than traditional horror flicks.
In my experience, films like “The Frighteners” and “Idle Hands” have struggled at the box office because the harmonious blend of humor and horror doesn’t always resonate with audiences. It’s a delicate balance that requires careful handling to ensure both elements complement each other rather than detract from the overall impact.
The film’s R-rating and marketing strategy towards boys, as well as the focus on Fox and Seyfried’s sex appeal, led many to believe that the studio overlooked the true audience for the movie. Cody argued that the film should have been targeted at girls, who would have appreciated its empowering message, rather than being marketed as a titillating experience for hormonal teenage boys. Some felt that 20th Century Fox missed an opportunity to sell this “girl power” movie effectively to its intended audience.
Due to various reasons, the movie titled “Jennifer’s Body” didn’t resonate with either critics or viewers when it was initially released. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a score of 46%, with a consensus that states, “Jennifer’s Body boasts some witty dialogue, but the horror-comedy blend doesn’t deliver enough humor or scares to truly please its audience.” The film received a “C-” from CinemaScore on its opening day and ended up earning $16.2 million in the U.S., $31.5 million worldwide, all on a budget of $16 million.
Over time, Jennifer’s Body has garnered more favorable reviews and critical reappraisal, largely due to fans understanding how 20th Century Fox mishandled the marketing campaign. The movie has since gained cult status as a feminist icon, particularly among viewers who grasp its thematic elements. A sequel could potentially right the wrongs of the original film, assuming all the essential creative minds are on board for its production. Here’s to hoping that comes to fruition!
