Despite maintaining a steady flow of content in the Star Wars series and specials on Disney+, Lucasfilm appears to be facing challenges when it comes to launching their theatrical feature-length projects. Projects such as Rian Johnson’s proposed Star Wars trilogy, a project led by Kevin Feige, and Patty Jenkins’ shelved Rogue Squadron movie have all faced obstacles in reaching production. It seems making a new Star Wars film has proven to be a challenging endeavor. Among the latest updates regarding upcoming films is Shawn Levy’s untitled Star Wars feature starring Ryan Gosling, which recently provided some information that might give fans an idea of its current progress.

In a conversation with ScreenRant, screenwriter Jonathan Tropper discussed his collaboration with Levy and expressed his enthusiasm for their upcoming Star Wars project, which Tropper is writing. He cautioned not to reveal much about the movie, simply stating, “I can’t say much about it. Yes, we’re still developing it. Yes, it’s our fourth project together. It’s been since The Adam Project that we last worked on a project.” Notably, he also hinted, “I hope it reaches theaters sooner than expected.

Previously, Tropper and Levy collaborated on the 2014 movie “This is Where I Leave You,” which was directed by Levy and penned by Tropper. They also worked together on “Kodachrome.” Tropper wrote and executive produced this film. Their most recent collaboration was “The Adam Project,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Mark Ruffalo. This upcoming, as-of-yet unnamed “Star Wars” film marks their reunion following Levy’s work on both “Deadpool” and “Wolverine.

Several points are leaning in favor of Shawn Levy’s upcoming “Star Wars” project, increasing its likelihood of going into production. A notable factor is the involvement of Ryan Gosling as the lead actor, a fact that emerged in early 2025. Gosling’s star power could be a significant draw for audiences, potentially boosting the film’s success. Additionally, Levy’s impressive track record with “Deadpool & Wolverine” is another advantage. This film, released in 2024, was the second-highest-grossing movie of that year, earning over 1.3 billion dollars, and it also holds the title as the highest-grossing R-rated film ever made.

After the news about Gosling’s debut in Star Wars , more casting speculations have arisen, with Jesse Plemons potentially taking on a villain role. These rumors hint that Tropper’s script might be nearing completion and could soon be ready for filming. In the meantime, Levy’s unnamed Star Wars project serves as a promising sign for Lucasfilm, helping to rebuild fan trust in their plans for the franchise’s future.

Currently, after 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” only the upcoming “The Mandalorian and Grogu” (the big-screen version of the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian”) is slated for release.
