EXCLUSIVE DISCUSSION: Why Bollywood directors are not able to tap potential of Hindi superstars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and more

As a dedicated Bollywood enthusiast with countless hours spent analyzing and dissecting films, I find myself constantly yearning for the magic that South Indian cinema seems to effortlessly weave. The way they tap into the full potential of their superstars is nothing short of mesmerizing.

For years, moviegoers have adored stars such as Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan in Bollywood, who keep enchanting audiences and dominating the box office. Yet, despite their tireless efforts, numerous Hindi filmmakers are still unable to fully utilize their talent’s potential. In a recent private conversation with TopMob, Anmol Jamwal, a YouTube personality and movie critic, along with Varun Gupta, the marketing head of several Bollywood films, tackled this crucial topic.

They discussed how several Bollywood filmmakers have struggled to bring out the best in these stars while South Indian filmmakers are consistently tapped into their true capabilities like Atlee did with SRK in Jawan or AR Murugadoss did with Aamir Khan in Ghajini.

Speaking as a devoted admirer, I’ve been pondering over the exceptional portrayals of Shah Rukh Khan in Jawan and Ranbir Kapoor in Animal by their respective directors, Atlee and Sandeep Reddy Vanga. These visionary filmmakers have skillfully redefined these superstars, leading to massive box office triumphs.

In my chat with entertainment journalist and industry expert, Himesh Mankad, I underscored the importance of trust between an actor and director in attaining such outcomes.

In simpler terms, he said, “Stars often trust a director if they feel secure. However, an actor may intervene if the director fails to instill confidence. For instance, a renowned filmmaker once shared that Salman Khan provided ten ideas for a movie—four of them were outstanding and could elevate the film. It’s up to the director to decide which ideas to use and which to discard, creating a harmonious collaboration.

As an ardent admirer, I found myself pondering: Are our beloved superstars ready to embrace change? I brought up Salman Khan’s upcoming film “Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan” and wondered aloud, “There seems to be a sense of mediocrity where a weak script goes unchallenged. Could it be that a director like Atlee could bring the necessary precision and elevate the material?” This query mirrors my concern that Hindi filmmakers and actors frequently opt for safe choices instead of venturing into unexplored creative territories.

Instead of saying that, Varun Gupta highlighted the importance of directors gaining the confidence of actors. He used instances to illustrate his point: “Actors such as Ranbir Kapoor trust a director like Aditya Dhar because he has demonstrated his skill in his specific genre. This trust enables the actor to fully commit to the director’s vision. Without it, even highly skilled stars find it challenging to deliver their best.

Gupta went on to clarify that filmmakers from the south of India have previously focused on achieving a balance between the success of actors and the narrative itself.

The three of them emphasized that the viewers should be given priority over the actors or promotions. Varun explained that in the context of Hindi films, it is crucial to persuade the audience to attend a movie screening, as they have often been disappointed before.

On the other hand, movie-watching is deeply ingrained in the daily routine of people living in Southern regions of India. This was expressed as, “In the South, watching a movie isn’t considered a luxury or leisurely activity—it’s a tradition, much like visiting a temple.” This sentiment underscores the dedicated approach taken by filmmakers from both industries toward their craft.

As a result, they emphasize the importance of increased cooperation between Bollywood celebrities and Ittnas Jawan, as well as Kabir Singh demonstrates that when a director and an actor have faith in one another and strive for a common goal, the outcome can be truly inspiring.
