EXCLUSIVE: Khel Khel Mein star Akshay Kumar wants comedy to be taken 'seriously' in Bollywood; 'Itna halke mein kyun lete hain?'

As a long-time follower of Akshay Kumar’s illustrious career, I wholeheartedly echo his sentiments regarding the undervalued comedy genre in Bollywood. With over two decades in the industry and numerous successful comic roles under his belt, it’s high time we start taking comedy as seriously as other genres.

Akshay Kumar, affectionately called Khiladi Kumar, is a multitalented actor who has been making significant contributions to Hindi cinema for years. Known particularly for his exceptional comedy skills, he has dabbled in various genres within Bollywood. His hilarious films such as Hera Pheri, Garam Masala, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Heyy Babyy, and others showcase this talent. In the upcoming film Khel Khel Mein, Akshay returns to the comedy genre. The renowned star has recently shared his thoughts on how people tend not to take comedy in films seriously, suggesting that it is underappreciated within Bollywood.

In a recent, unique conversation with TopMob, actor Akshay Kumar, while discussing his film Khel Khel Mein, expressed his hope that audiences would start viewing the comedy genre as something worthy of genuine consideration.

“Akshay questioned why comedies are undervalued in our film industry, stating he’s yet to witness a comedy film winning the Best Film award.”

The speaker has never observed a comedian hero being given the leading role in the Best Hero category. He wonders why this trend exists.

In backing up his claim, Akshay mentioned renowned comedians like Charlie Chaplin, Jim Carrey, Jackie Chan, and Barry Hill. He shared that when he’s facing tough times, he turns to watching Charlie Chaplin films or the TV series FRIENDS.

“It gives you so much of peace. Isn’t that supposed to get an award for that? I hope in my industry people take comedy seriously,” he concluded.

In an interview with Forbes India this year, Akshay Kumar mentioned that transitioning from action films to comedy movies marked a significant turning point in his life. Akshay explained that, despite being trained in martial arts and possessing exceptional action skills, he had previously been cast mainly for his stunts rather than his acting abilities. The renowned actor further emphasized this shift as a crucial development in his career.

Akshay Kumar, known for his roles in Khel Khel Mein, disclosed that he hadn’t been given opportunities to act in genres such as drama, romance, or comedy because people saw him only as a serious actor. However, against all expectations, he landed a part in the film Hera Pheri, which was purely comedic, marking a significant departure from his previous roles.

In terms of his professional career, Akshay Kumar recently appeared in the movie “Sarfira,” directed by Sudha Kongara. Radhikka Madan played the main character in this film which hit the screens on August 2. Unfortunately, Akshay’s recent films like Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan, Mission Raniganj, Selfiee, and Ram Setu have not fared well at the box office.

Returning to the thrilling Khel Khel Mein, I just can’t contain my excitement as it boasts an incredible lineup of talented actors! Besides Akshay Kumar, you’ll see Vaani Kapoor, Fardeen Khan, Taapsee Pannu, Ammy Virk, Aditya Seal, and Pragya Jaiswal grace the screen. This year on August 2nd, we were treated to a sneak peek of the movie through its trailer release!

Under the direction of Mudassar Aziz, the film Khel Khel Mein serves as an official adaptation of the 2016 Italian movie Perfect Strangers. The release date for this production featuring Akshay is set for August 15, aligning with Independence Day. Intriguingly, it will be competing with Stree 2 and Vedaa at the box office on its opening day.

Following my thrilling stint in Khel Khel Mein, I’ve got an exciting lineup of films ahead. You can catch me next in Welcome To The Jungle, the much-anticipated third chapter of the Welcome series. Additionally, keep an eye out for Skyforce, Singham Again, Hera Pheri 3, and Jolly LLB 3. I’m looking forward to sharing these stories with you!
