As a dedicated follower of the glamorous world of Bollywood, I have always admired Madhuri Dixit‘s resilience and courage in the face of adversity. Her decision to be a part of Saajan, despite being advised against it by many, showcases her unwavering dedication to her craft and her belief in the power of storytelling.
In the 90s, Madhuri Dixit reigned supreme in Bollywood with her captivating charm, striking beauty, exceptional acting talent, mesmerizing dance moves, and impeccable style. The decade’s opening saw the success of her 1991 film “Saajan,” where she starred alongside Sanjay Dutt. However, in more recent times, she disclosed that she was discouraged from joining a movie because there were doubts about whether audiences would accept Sanjay Dutt portraying a disabled character.
During an interview with TopMob, Madhuri Dixit shared that when she agreed to join the cast of Saajan, there were questions and cautions raised by others. This esteemed actress, recognized for her outstanding performances, had already achieved great heights in her career when she took on the role in this Sanjay Dutt-led film.
Dixit recalled, “This is Sajan. What a beautiful film. What songs are in that movie. And I remember when I had signed this film, many people said, why are you doing this movie? It’s not going to work.”

It was mentioned that Sanjay Dutt being cast as the lead in the film was the main source of doubt due to concerns about his ability to convincingly portray a differently-abled character, given his previous roles primarily focused on action. Some people cautioned that altering the established image of the actor who played Rocky might not sit well with audiences, potentially impacting the movie’s success.
Reflecting on those moments, I exclaimed, “They claimed Sanjay Dutt was merely an action star, yet he was portrayed as if handicapped – unimaginable! I couldn’t fathom how this could succeed. But then the movie was released, and oh boy, it made history after that!
Stepping into the limelight, I must admit that I once harbored some skepticism and doubts about Saajan’s potential success. However, all my reservations were swiftly dispelled when this film took the box office by storm with an outstanding performance. The melodies from its soundtrack dominated music charts, captivating audiences everywhere, while the heartwarming narrative struck a chord with many. As a result, Saajan became the highest-grossing film of 1991 and cemented itself as one of the most cherished and memorable romantic dramas from the ’90s. Not only did this cinematic masterpiece contribute to the continued success of Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, and Madhuri Dixit’s illustrious careers but it also left an indelible mark on Bollywood itself.
Actress Total Dhamaal posted that Dutt appeared appealing in a distinct character, and tunes from the movie remain timeless classics. In case you’re not familiar, some of the enduring songs from the film include Mera Dil Bhi Kitna Pagal Hai, Dekha Hai Pehli Baar, Bahut Pyar Karte Hain, along with several others.
The movie “Saajan” revolves around a tale of two siblings, Aman and Akash. Both find themselves smitten with the same woman, Pooja. In a selfless act, they’re prepared to relinquish her to spare others, but it’s Pooja who eventually makes the final call. The film was masterfully directed by Lawrence D’Souza, while Nadeem–Shravan created the captivating soundtrack for this production.
