In a unique conversation with TopMob, movie director Ram Gopal Varma shared that neither Amitabh Bachchan nor Abhishek Bachchan were his original choices for the stars of Sarkar. Originally titled “Nayak,” he had imagined Sanjay Dutt and Naseeruddin Shah in the leading roles instead.
Ram Gopal Varma reminisced, “During the 1993 blast case, Sanjay Dutt was taken into custody while I was directing a movie titled ‘Nayak.’ Following his arrest, I occupied myself by creating an action-comedy. Remarkably, it turned out to be a blockbuster. Due to its success, when Sanjay regained his freedom, we opted for another action-comedy rather than a political film. Unfortunately, that movie didn’t fare well.

Reflecting on my journey, I can confidently say that without the success of that initial endeavor, I wouldn’t be here today. However, fate had other plans, and the project associated with the title “Nayak” never truly came to fruition. It was an intriguing title, but the concept remained unrealized. Fast forward a few years, and I gave life to Sarkar. In essence, Nayak, in its own unique way, evolved into Sarkar.
When inquired about whether Sanjay Dutt was initially intended for the role of Abhishek in the film, he affirmed that yes, this was originally planned, and Naseeruddin Shah was slated to play Amitabh’s part. As Nayak didn’t materialize, Sarkar was produced instead. If Nayak had been made, regardless of its success, Sarkar would have never seen the light of day.
In 2005, Ram Gopal Varma directed the political crime thriller known as “Sarkar,” which drew inspiration from “The Godfather.” Amitabh Bachchan portrayed Subhash Nagre, a powerful figure with complex morals in this movie that delves into the intricate web of power, loyalty, and deceit.
Abhishek Bachchan stars as Shankar, the son who eventually assumes control of his father’s business empire. With an engaging storyline, powerful acting, and a gritty, authentic depiction of Mumbai’s criminal underbelly, Sarkar earned critical acclaim. Its success resulted in two follow-ups, Sarkar Raj (2008) and Sarkar 3 (2017), establishing it as a staple cult political crime drama within the Indian film industry.
