Among the upcoming book-to-screen adaptations, you’ll find the psychological thriller “The Housemaid,” based on Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel. The story revolves around a young woman with a complicated past (portrayed by Sydney Sweeney), who becomes a maid for a wealthy couple and encounters peril in her employment. Readers of the book may be intrigued to see how well the movie aligns with its source material. However, one cast member, Michele Morrone, who plays an enigmatic character in the film, offers some clues.
Frequently, readers can become upset when movie adaptations stray too far from their original stories, as seen with films like “The Cat in the Hat” (1995), “The Scarlet Letter,” and “Gulliver’s Travels.” Despite the reasons for alterations, this doesn’t always prevent criticism. In the case of “The Housemaid,” Michele Morrone reassured fans of the book during an interview with Variety at the SXSW TV Film Festival by expressing a perspective that should bring joy to them:
From my perspective, the movie seems set to closely follow the original novel. As for me, I enjoy playing eccentric characters, as you’re well aware. Yet, I feel quite gratified to be involved in this project, even though I get to bring some quirkiness to it!
Being a book enthusiast, it’s always delightful when a movie version aligns with its original source. What viewers truly aspire for is seeing the familiar story unfold on the silver screen as if it were real. Of course, alterations are necessary for thematic purposes, and they can be advantageous. However, my expectations for the adaptation of Housemaid have grown a bit more hopeful, believing that it will preserve the intricate and suspenseful atmosphere of the book.
In the movie, Michele Morrone portrays Enzo, a reticent gardener at the Winchester estate. When housemaid Millie encounters Enzo for the first time, he exudes an enigmatic aura. Since Enzo isn’t fluent in English and is rather solitary, Millie remains uncertain about his trustworthiness, although viewers of the book are likely aware that there’s more to this man than one might initially perceive.
More on The Housemaid

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about Sydney Sweeney’s recent adventures with Amanda Seyfried on the set of “The Housemaid.” However, her recent video collaboration with Brandon Sklenar has left me quite bewildered. I just can’t get over it!
The former student of Subservience undoubtedly possesses the talent to portray a peculiar character in the movie, and as he stated, he enjoys such roles. He exuded an unusual aura in The Trial where he played a puzzling murder suspect. Moreover, he delivered an exceptional performance in the 365 Days film series, which are known for their graphically explicit scenes on Netflix. In these films, he assumed the role of Massimo, a member of the Sicilian Mafia Family who kidnaps an appealing sales director and holds her captive for a year with the intention of making her fall in love with him. Given his portrayal of an obsessive, manipulative character like that, I believe he will excel in playing Enzo.
Should “The Housemaid,” currently in production, stay true to Freida McFadden’s novel, viewers will be delighted by a faithful adaptation, meeting intriguing characters like Enzo and other unusual individuals from the original work. Given Michele Morrone’s knack for tackling complex roles, I eagerly anticipate his performance in this adaptation, as he brings the novel’s memorable character to life.
The 2025 movie release The Housemaid hits theaters this Christmas Day.
