The screenwriter for the “Wicked” sequel, Dana Fox, shared that the upcoming film titled “Wicked: For Good” will delve further into the relationship between Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariane Grande). During an interview with Screen Rant at the Writer’s Guild of America awards, Fox elaborated that “For Good ” intends to extend the second act of the original Broadway musical, which some viewers find less captivating compared to act one. Fox stated:
In Part Two, there is a greater opportunity for delving deeper and expanding the narrative. Compared to Part One, which was densely populated with elements from the initial act of the play and necessary tasks, we had to balance exploration, depth, and providing unique moments that weren’t in the original script. However, in the second installment, there is more room for individual interpretation and a chance to visit some locations not previously seen in the play, which I am eager for audiences to experience.
In the first half, you’ll find it brimming with some of the musical’s standout tunes like “Defying Gravity” and “Popular,” along with a few surprising plot turns. To make up for this, the upcoming film Wicked: For Good will introduce two fresh compositions penned by Stephen Schwartz, the original composer. These new songs will be solo performances by Erivo and Grande, offering fans an exciting peek at something entirely new.
However, Fox assures us that the play’s second act in “Wicked” will delve deeper into the relationship between Elphaba and Glinda.
At every moment during our work, we focused on the girls and their bond, as well as their unique friendship and the deep connection between them. We were aware that this was a tale of platonic love, and in every scene, even when one character wasn’t present, it should be understood that they were constantly thinking about each other. The storyline followed their journey of growing affection for one another.
‘Wicked’ Is About Celebrating a Deep Connection Between Two Women
Some viewers may express dissatisfaction upon hearing the term “platonic love story,” but Fox maintains that such love can be equally profound as its romantic counterpart. To illustrate this, she often refers to her own marriage as an example.
I find this tale intriguing as it portrays two women initially harboring intense dislike for each other, unaware they are destined to be each other’s soulmates. It reminds me of my own life experiences where I’ve encountered individuals, like meeting my husband, who at first seemed detrimental due to the intensity of our feelings. Yet, here’s a chance for readers to witness such complex emotions unfold in the context of female friendship.
Fox’s remarks resonate with those of actress Grande, who also confirms that although the characters are deeply in love, their affection is purely platonic. However, she admits that some hints of queer themes within the storyline are deliberate, suggesting that Glinda may lean towards being private about her feelings. Erivo concurred, noting that Elphaba cherishes all forms of love, and their profound bond should be embraced.
This year on November 22nd, the much-anticipated movie “Wicked: For Good” will be released in theaters, meaning fans won’t have to endure a long wait to find out how intense (and possibly intricate) the relationship between Elphaba and Glinda becomes.
