I’m excited to share how our story unfolds: a gas main explosion beneath a building sets off a chain reaction, causing chaos above ground and trapping a subway train underground. As executive producer and showrunner of ‘Med’, I explained to The Hollywood Reporter, Ruzek from ‘P.D.’ and Kidd from ‘Fire’ are among those trapped with the passengers on that train. The entire cast from all three shows join forces to rescue everyone safely while simultaneously uncovering the mystery behind the explosion’s origin.

Meanwhile, Andrea Newman, the showrunner of “Chicago Fire,” revealed to THR that the grand scheme to cross over all three series had been planned from the beginning. However, the exact timing of its airing was determined by finding the optimal moment.

For quite some time now, we’ve been eager to make this happen,” Newman shared. “These episodes are always thrilling, and it’s just a blast to unite everyone. However, there were obstacles like COVID, a shortened season due to strikes – various factors that prevented us from executing this for the past four to five years. Yet, when we embarked on this season, our aim was clear: to create a grand crossover event, and that’s precisely what we achieved. What’s more, it’s our most ambitious one yet.

As a passionate viewer, I’ve been intrigued by the intricate ways Chicago P.D.‘s showrunner, Gwen Sigan, has described the behind-the-scenes collaborative effort that goes into crafting a major event across all three shows. It’s fascinating to know how they work together seamlessly!

Sigan told THR that the idea had been casually discussed at the start of the season, but things became more serious around September. The ball started rolling with Wolf Productions discussing possibilities, which then moved on to the showrunners, followed by the writers. Initially, it was just brainstorming about large concepts for what could be done, and this particular idea emerged victorious. As it circulated among the writers, it became increasingly tangible until it was filmed and is now set to air. It’s amazing!

As a passionate gamer, I’ve got to give a shoutout to the brilliant minds behind One Chicago – Victor Teran, Stephen Hootstein, and Joe Halpin. These guys have been in the thick of it, jotting down ideas directly from Dick Wolf’s offices, and weaving together an intricate storyline that keeps me hooked from start to finish during those three-hour events. They deserve a round of applause for their dedication and craftsmanship!

Prominent actors from the three series who will propel the narrative are Amy Morton, portraying Chicago P.D.’s Desk Sergeant Trudy Platt-McHolland, and Darren Barnet, taking on the role of Dr. John Frost in Chicago Med, a doctor specializing in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

Newman was thrilled about this crossover specifically; there’s simply a lot happening here. The scale of it is immense, with events taking place not only on the surface but also beneath it. It resembles a movie in a unique way, unlike anything we’ve seen before. The visual aspect of it is stunningly cinematic, and it carries a deep emotional weight.

She added, “I’m aware that the audience enjoys the emotional aspects of relationships, and so do I. Most of our main characters – Pascal, Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo), Severide (Kinney), Violet (Hanako Greensmith) and Carver (Jake Lockett) – are dealing with a lot in their personal lives as they navigate their relationships and figure out the true nature of these connections.

The One Chicago crossover airs Wednesday from 8-11 p.m. on NBC.
