As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours navigating virtual worlds, I find myself constantly drawn to the intricate designs and innovative ideas that blur the line between reality and fantasy. The Toto Table Lamp by Fabien Cappello is one such design that catches my eye.

If someone asked you to sketch a lamp, you’d probably draw a design featuring a triangular light shade and a rectangular base – a classic representation. However, turning these basic dimensions into a real-life object would result in something akin to what Fabien Cappello has designed with “Toto”.

Collaboratively designed with Swedish brand Hem, the Toto lamp by Cappello breaks conventions of traditional lighting design with a clever play on scale and color.

According to Cappello, the idea for this project stemmed from a hunch I had – that it was possible to fashion an entire lamp using just the typical construction of a lampshade. In essence, one cylindrical lampshade would be used to create the base, while another conical one would serve as the lampshade itself. However, what makes this design unique is that the entire body of the lamp actually glows and functions as the shade.

As I gaze upon this captivating lamp, I’m struck by how every nook and cranny is bathed in light. This illumination makes the vibrant colors and whimsical patterns on the fabrics stand out vividly across its entire frame. It’s truly a designer’s delight to have such flexibility in experimenting with diverse textiles, creating a kaleidoscope of colors that dance and play on this lamp’s surface. My connection with Hem goes back to 2021, when I collaborated with them on a limited-edition glass piece – a partnership that has only grown stronger since then.

In a creative twist, I found myself drawn to experimenting with size variations for my lamps. The grandest one stands tall at 64 cm, followed by a medium-sized version at 47 cm, and a compact, pocket-friendly model at 28 cm. Interestingly, the larger lamps offer multiple color options for both shade and base, while the smaller one boasts a simpler, block color scheme.

You can buy Toto right now from Hem’s site. The price range starts at around £199 GBP (equivalent to about $261 USD).
