A video circulating on the internet, suggesting that some Hollywood celebrities were compensated by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to travel to Ukraine, has been proven false by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
The BBC’s Verification team uncovered that the video in question was a fabrication, linked to a Russian misinformation strategy. However, it wasn’t until the deceptive material had already gained widespread popularity on social networking sites and been shared by Elon Musk on X, that this was discovered.
The BBC’s Verification team found out that the video was fake, part of a Russian disinformation effort. But regrettably, it became viral on social media platforms first, and later Elon Musk retweeted it on X, only after the truth was uncovered.
The stars who were paid, as stated in the video, are Angelina Jolie, Sylvester Stallone (Sean Pean is a typo), Jean-Claude Van Damme, Orlando Bloom, and Ben Stiller.
The fake news video, originally stated to be from eonline.com, was quickly discredited by E! News, which is owned by NBCUniversal. An E! News representative confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Friday that the video is not genuine and did not come from E! News.
BBC Verify, in the past, has examined the alleged Russian misinformation effort linked to the fake USAID video.
Stiller stated on Twitter that the claims in the video about his humanitarian trip to Ukraine being funded by USAID or Russia are false. He personally financed the entire trip, with no monetary assistance whatsoever.
The phony video focuses on the latest Trump administration in Washington D.C., proposing the dissolution of USAID and its merger with the U.S. Department of State. Additionally, there’s been a lot of speculation concerning Elon Musk’s intentions as the newly appointed leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
In the past few months, the creator of Tesla and a prominent tech billionaire has shown support for conservative political figures such as Donald Trump, Nigel Farage from Reform U.K., and Germany’s far-right AfD party. Musk, who supported and contributed financially to Trump’s re-election campaign in the United States, has now taken on an advisory role within the White House as part of the new administration in Washington D.C.
