Despite the success of the Amazon series, it’s fair to say that the latest releases from Fallout have struggled, particularly with Fallout 76 not generating much excitement.
As fans eagerly anticipate a fresh announcement about the next Fallout installment, there’s been an intriguing flurry of activity coming from Obsidian Entertainment, the team behind Fallout: New Vegas.
John Gonzalez Returns
According to Video Games Chronicle, John Gonzalez, a well-known game writer, has accepted a creative director position at Obsidian Entertainment, though the specific game he’s working on remains undisclosed. However, his LinkedIn profile does hint that it’s not Fallout: New Vegas 2.
Despite being primarily recognized for his contributions to Fallout: New Vegas, Gonzalez has a rich history in gaming, having worked on games such as Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Horizon Zero Dawn. Additionally, he served as the narrative director for Horizon Forbidden West.
Given his rich experience in storytelling within video games, it’s plausible that Gonzalez has been recruited for a project beyond just Fallout. Although some may speculate that he would excel at developing the sequel to The Outer Worlds, it’s equally likely that he could be crafting an entirely fresh intellectual property instead.
The Legacy of Fallout: New Vegas
In terms of the Fallout series, many fans believe that Fallout: New Vegas ranks among the greatest Fallout games ever made. The primary reason often cited is that New Vegas offered a compelling story, and in contrast to the main series, it provided players with numerous narrative decisions that had tangible effects based on their choices.
2010 saw the release of this game, yet its reputation as one of the greatest from the Fallout series persists today. Many players have expressed a desire to revisit this particular location within the wasteland.
New Vegas in the Future
As the television series concludes with a hint towards New Vegas, it’s clear that there’s been renewed curiosity about the game. Many newcomers to the fanbase are intrigued as to why longtime players often hold New Vegas in such high regard.
In 2023, Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky expressed an interest in a remaster. Although no official announcement has been made, the success of the upcoming TV series might sway the studio’s decision. Given that the show’s popularity seems to boost game sales, fans can view the TV series and games as connected, at least for now.
Given that some fans found the latest major release of the “Fallout” series less appealing, it might be beneficial for the franchise to develop a spin-off centered around its more beloved titles as an interim step. A remastered version could help keep fans engaged until they’re prepared to unveil the next mainline game following “Fallout 76.
A new Fallout game hasn’t been officially announced.
