As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for the offbeat and unconventional, I find myself intrigued by Ella Purnell‘s latest venture, “The Scurry.” The idea of killer squirrels may initially sound like a cinematic joke gone wrong, but given Purnell’s track record in taking risks and her faith in director Craig Roberts, there might just be something more to this film than meets the eye.
Actors who reach stardom often choose to either stick with safe bets based on well-known IPs or take daring chances and venture into unconventional projects they are passionate about. Ella Purnell, famed for her roles in Fallout and Yellowjackets, is opting for the latter. Her upcoming film, The Scurry, places her in a battle against an army of vicious squirrels – yes, you read that right! At FanExpo Chicago (via Collider), Purnell spoke about her role in this horror-comedy and acknowledged that the concept might sound strange. In fact, she admitted that the movie could potentially make or break her career on the big screen due to its unusual premise.
Unlike some actors who boast about their latest films as groundbreaking masterpieces, Purnell chose candor. Star of Fallout, she admitted uncertainty about the final version of the film, but expressed confidence in director Craig Roberts (The Phantom of the Open). She adores his concept for the movie. However, she hastily clarified that she’ll need to watch the final cut before determining if it could potentially harm her career. Explaining further, Purnell stated:
“I’m really fond of Craig Roberts, I find him incredibly gifted. If you haven’t encountered his work yet, I highly recommend checking it out. He’s quite an unusual fellow. His upcoming film, ‘The Scurry’, while bearing some resemblance to Shaun of the Dead, is not a copy. Craig mentioned that despite everyone expecting it to be like Shaun of the Dead, he intends to make it Beau is Afraid. Initially, I was puzzled, considering it’s about killer squirrels. Yet, somehow, he managed it. To be honest, I have no idea how this film will pan out. It could turn out to be an amazing masterpiece or a disaster for my career. However, I have faith in him and believe it will be good.”
What Is Craig Roberts’ The Scurry All About?
In the movie “The Scurry,” as penned by Craig Roberts, Purnell assumes the role of a park caretaker who must employ her extraordinary abilities to endure an onslaught of aggressive squirrels. Prepare for this film to embody all the charmingly cheesy elements you’d expect from a movie with such a whimsical plot, under the guidance of a skilled British actor and director. Joining Purnell in “The Scurry” are an entirely homegrown British cast consisting of Rhys Ifans, Antonia Thomas, Daniel Mays, Beau Gadson, and Paapa Essidu. The film’s summary goes as follows:
A commotion breaks out at an eco-cafe as a group of vengeful squirrels attack the employees and patrons, requiring two emergency pest handlers to intervene in the ensuing frenzy.
Actress Ella Purnell has a lot coming up in the future. Apart from the upcoming second season of Amazon Prime Video’s Emmy-nominated show Fallout, which is still in its early stages, Purnell will switch roles from being pursued to becoming the pursuer in her next project. Additionally, Purnell can be seen in the new comedy-thriller series Sweetpea, produced by Starz. This series is set for release later this year, where Purnell portrays Rhiannon, a woman who feels disregarded at work and has a deteriorating relationship. As she discovers an unforeseen fondness for murder, Rhiannon grapples with hiding her new pastime from those around her.
As a thrilled supporter, I’m eagerly waiting for “The Scurry” to hit the screens some time in 2026. Until then, why not take a peek at the first trailer for “Sweetpea” that we have right here: [Link to the trailer]
