Family of Giant Squids Takes Over Park in Taiwan

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for immersive experiences, I must say that “Squid Squad: Family Day” at this year’s Taoyuan Land Art Festival has truly caught my eye (or rather, heart). Coming from someone who’s spent countless hours in virtual worlds, the blend of real-life interaction and digital creativity is a breath of fresh air.

This year at the Taoyuan Land Art Festival, Manfred Eccli and Pedro Cavaco Leitão’s Moradavaga collaborated with Blue Dragon Art Company to exhibit “Squid Squad: Family Day.” Continuing their squid-themed installations, this Italian-Portuguese architectural duo brings their artistry to Taiwan, exploring the rich history and culture of Guishan district. A group of local and international artists join them in creating a vibrant showcase of outdoor artwork.

Located around Zhiqing Lake, this interactive installation showcases three vibrant, lifelike squids – small, medium, and large – representing a typical Taiwanese family. During the day, these creatures seem to emerge from the grass as their tentacles stretch and intertwine with trees. By nightfall, “Squid Squad” transforms the park into a softly lit world of red, orange, and blue hues, casting an enchanting atmosphere after sunset. During the day, it functions as a play space for acoustic activities, while at night it illuminates the area.

Instead of just being an adorable display, the artwork intends to bridge connections among families by offering a distinctive interactive play and audio experience. The creators welcome viewers of all ages to peer through the squids’ eye-like windows and transmit messages to listeners positioned at the ends of the tentacles.

In harmony with the broader objective of the event, “Squid Squad” is one of several exhibits that strengthen the bond between art and the environment. Within this woodland menagerie, you’ll encounter neon-illuminated rabbits, towering iron turtles, and glowing fabric fish that mimic the soft glow of lanterns. Drawing inspiration from the park’s surroundings, the festival’s artists cleverly use their space to illuminate the organic rhythm of nature.
