As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming experience under my belt, I must say that while I appreciate Ryan Seacrest‘s enthusiasm and charisma as the new host of Wheel of Fortune, there’s one aspect of his hosting style that has been grating on me ever so slightly – the $40,000 Bonus Round reveal.
After assuming hosting responsibilities for Wheel of Fortune in September following Pat Sajak’s retirement, Ryan Seacrest has primarily been riding on a tide of favorable responses and feedback. However, the show’s new set design seems to have taken more criticism than he has. Now, not everything that sparkles is eternally golden, and there are some viewers who have identified a particular concern regarding Seacrest’s hosting style which I believe should be addressed.
Regarding criticisms from fans, Seacrest has been pointed out for making a few errors and sometimes being slightly slow in responding to contestants’ guesses about their letters. However, what’s perplexing some viewers now is how the host of American Idol discloses the $40,000 Bonus Round prize that’s hidden within an envelope. As one viewer expressed on Reddit:
I like Seacrest, but gotta admit, I’m not a fan of the dramatic 40K reveals lol
For people who may not know, Ryan Seacrest typically presents things in a very optimistic manner. It’s no surprise then, that part of his style involves building anticipation around the Bonus Round envelope and the potential prizes it contains. And yes, winning $40,000 for solving a puzzle is certainly an exciting prospect!
However, it’s been noted in comments both online and on the game show that the $40,000 prize is the least valuable prize on the mini-wheel. Consequently, Seacrest has received criticism for being overly dramatic when building suspense before revealing the prize.
Take a look at the most recent instance I’ve temporarily dubbed as “the $40,000 shuffle”. This is the incident that led to the comment you mentioned earlier.
Given that Ryan Seacrest has generally maintained a polite demeanor towards contestants’ incorrect guesses throughout the show thus far, I won’t delve deeply into this point, but isn’t it somewhat peculiar? It’s reminiscent of a parent trying to persuade a hesitant child that an alternative snack, not ice cream, is just as delicious.
Reddit users discuss what makes Ryan Seacrest’s presentation style peculiar during certain instances, pointing out factors like the build-up suggesting a much larger prize and his tendency not to disclose the $40,000 amount himself.
- Agreed… The Mrs. and I commented on that last night. He presents it like it’s something more than the minimum prize amount! One of these days, the contestant is going to react disappointedly. – @intheslipstream1
- He also contorts his body awkwardly and bounces aroind to just flip the card open. Then says ‘it was this much’ as if he can’t say the amount. Kind of weird. – @jrclarke413
- I don’t get the “It was this much.” There has to be a reason that the producers don’t want him to say it, but I can’t imagine why (except a nefarious and illegal editing of what the amount was, which makes no sense). – @texan-yankee
What perplexes me the most about that is this very sum – the one you can see clearly displayed on the envelope card, as well as the one I’m holding in my hand.
It seems likely that Ryan Seacrest would be overjoyed and perhaps even overwhelmed if he ever gets the chance to award $1 million on Wheel of Fortune, which hasn’t occurred outside a non-celebrity game since 2014. However, it’s still relatively early in his hosting tenure.
