As a cinema devotee with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that I was initially thrilled at the prospect of seeing beloved video game franchises come to life in the small screen through ‘Secret Level’. However, my excitement quickly turned to disappointment when I witnessed the treatment of iconic characters like Kratos from ‘God of War’ and Jin from ‘Ghost of Tsushima’.
In the spirit of the Love, Death & Robots anthology, Secret Level took well-known video game franchises and transformed them into engaging animated short films. Titles such as Pac-Man, Mega Man, Sifu, Armored Core, Dungeons & Dragons, and numerous others were brought to life on television screens. The first teaser trailer revealed two highly anticipated titles, leaving fans eager for their dedicated episodes. The second season introduced a PlayStation story with many favorite characters, including Kratos from God of War and Jin from Ghost of Tsushima. However, it seems that both characters were not fully utilized to the satisfaction of fans.
The games God of War and Ghost of Tsushima have captivating narratives, but regrettably, the characters from these games were reduced to mere brief appearances in the episode by Secret Level. This didn’t sit well with fans who voiced their dissatisfaction on social media platforms. A post by @KaptainKuba gained significant attention on X, featuring a screenshot of Kratos looking disappointed, accompanied by the caption, “This is how I feel after watching the PlayStation episode of Secret Level.” To put it bluntly, each episode is essentially an advertisement for the game it focuses on. However, other episodes told thought-provoking stories using these video game worlds (with even Pac-Man trying to do something similar). But the PlayStation episode seemed more like a congratulatory commercial for the company instead.
‘Secret Level’ Season 2 Could Redeem the Bad Episode
The show Secret Level, upon its release, garnered a mix of positive and negative reactions, with a 67% score on Rotten Tomatoes. On IMDb, it appears slightly more favorable, boasting an overall rating of 7.9/10. However, the specific episode titled “Playtime: Fulfillment” is the least favored episode of the season, scoring a modest 5.3/10. It seems that viewers are being candid about their feelings towards Amazon’s anthology series, acknowledging both its strengths and weaknesses.
With the unveiling of the second set of episodes, Amazon Prime Video confirmed that Season 2 is now officially in production. This upcoming season may introduce a fresh batch of video games, or potentially offer redemption arcs for characters who had limited representation in the final episode of Season 1. Games like Ghost of Tsushima and God of War, renowned for their deeply moving narratives, serve as examples of modern gaming excellence. If the characters from these games were to appear again in the animated anthology series, Secret Level, it would undoubtedly delight fans. Remarkably, despite receiving mixed reviews, Secret Level has been a resounding success. It shattered Prime Video’s record for the most streamed debut of an animated series when it premiered on December 10.
