From the start of “Severance” Season 2, fans have developed a theory, or rather many theories. One popular hypothesis revolves around the character of Helly (played by Britt Lower). Some spectators speculate that Helly might not be who she seems; instead, it’s been suggested that Helena could have infiltrated the inner world to delve deeper into what truly happens beneath the surface.

In Episode 4, titled “Woe’s Hollow”, it’s made clear that Helena was the one in the forest with the others, undergoing this peculiar excursion. Remarkably, she came close to losing her life due to this trip. Reflecting on it now, viewers have come to understand that Helena has been present since the team reunited – a revelation that takes many by surprise for various reasons.

Why Helena Infiltrated the Innie World in ‘Severance’

The aftermath was significant when Mark (Adam Scott), Helly, and Irving (John Turturro) employed the Overtime Contingency, sending their alters into the external world for a destructive 39 minutes. However, it appears that Helly inflicted the most harm. Learning that she was actually Helena, the granddaughter of the company’s founder and in charge of the Severance program, left her unsettled. To make matters worse, Helly was compelled to take the stage at a corporate conference. She immediately spoke out against the program, asserting that the alters were being mistreated and tormented, and expressing her desire for an immediate exit from the program.

In the start of Season 2, Helena finds herself in a crisis management situation. She releases a statement explaining that she had consumed alcohol while taking medication for a skin irritation not provided by Lumon, and this combination caused her to say things unintentionally. Unfortunately, what she said that night was a fabrication, intended as humor but clearly harmful. However, Lumon will take steps to rectify the situation.

In the footage from the fateful night, as Helena closely examines the scene where Helly rushes back to kiss Mark, she finds herself increasingly captivated and perhaps envious of their blossoming bond. It’s plausible that this is when Helena decides to employ a certain software they have in order to gain access to the office as her true identity, Helena. However, despite everyone else believing she is still Helly, there’s no reason for them to suspect otherwise, and they are unaware that a severed person could enter the severed floor without their consciousness transferring.

How Helena Was Found Out

During the field trip, Irving’s initial doubts were solidified as he observed Helly’s actions and behavior. Earlier, when she lied about encounters in the outside world like claiming to have seen a gardener during the night, it struck him as strange. However, on the field trip, her actions only served to strengthen his belief that something was amiss.

Following his seizure of her and attempting to submerge her in the water while proclaiming she was Helena instead of Helen, indicating his knowledge that she wasn’t truly Helen due to her reactions during Tramell Tillman’s (Milchick) reading of Kier Eagen’s book. Instead of staying focused and keeping quiet as Helly usually did, she found humor in the situation and laughed with Mark at its absurdity, making crude jokes instead of maintaining decorum. This was not how Helly would have acted, leading Irving to believe that this couldn’t be Helly. His actions led to his termination, halting his pursuit of the enigmatic black hallway and elevator. However, these events also revealed the extent to which Irving had lost his bearings, or perhaps he harbored hidden intentions.

Reconsidering this scenario with newfound information suggests that Helena, under false pretenses, deceived Mark by posing as someone else during their intimate encounter. This act not only breached Mark’s trust but also her own inner consciousness, a revelation that, if known by Helly, could be devastating. It’s complex due to their shared physical form and general identity, yet they are distinct mentally. Furthermore, this disclosure uncovers the possibility for outies (external personalities) to penetrate the inner world when an individual is separated.

With Helena hanging onto existence, she pleaded for Milchick to shut down whatever was causing her transformation into Helly, hoping to save her life. This situation offers an opportunity for outward-facing Mark to secretly enter the innie office and converse with others undetected. If someone possesses the skills to accomplish this, has allegiance to him, and can access such means, it’s Reghabi (Kare Aldridge). Of course, Mark is already attempting to reconcile with her, and if their reunion proves fruitful, he might not require such a method.

Why the Betrayal Is So Crucial to ‘Severance’

Reflecting on my journey, I now realize that every interaction I had with Mark, from the start of Season 2 until now, was essentially me, Helena, in disguise. From the moment I met with the others and fabricated stories about my self-discoveries in the outside world, to our visit to the Mammalians Nurturable to inquire about Gemma (Dichen Lachman), it was all a part of my plan.

In the TV show “Severance”, Mark had been nurturing a romantic bond with Helly. However, this relationship might be at risk since Helena has made a significant move to disconnect from her alternate self. Although Helly won’t recall any intimate moments with Mark, he remembers being intimate with Helena and exploring the shared body of the two versions of the same woman. In a physical sense, Mark has already been with Helly, an experience that Helena now holds exclusively for herself.

Could Mark and his group consider trusting Helly once more, given that they now understand her true identity? This revelation, however, frees Helly from any blame concerning her deceit. Yet, it may complicate their efforts to uncover the truth, as Lumon appears to be well aware of their plans.

This revelation might lead to disastrous outcomes for Mark’s quest for answers. Helena possesses critical information, understands their complex relationship intimately, and has now inserted herself mentally into both their minds (ironically, her own mind included), creating a tangled diversion. This implies that Helena is more heartless and malevolent than previously thought. It seems she intentionally aimed to challenge Mark, leave him disoriented, and make him feel inadequate and deceived by the person who means the most to him in every possible way: herself.

Looking ahead, it’s intriguing to see how the rest of the season unfolds and how these events affect Helly’s relationships, especially with Mark, but also with others. Additionally, her increasing animosity towards her outie is noteworthy. By the way, don’t forget to check out “Severance” on Apple TV+.

The next few events in the season will be captivating, particularly as they influence Helly’s relationships with Mark and others. It’s also important to note her escalating dislike for her outie. By the way, “Severance” is available on Apple TV+.
