Fantastic Beasts Alum Jude Law Gets Real About The Franchise’s Future While Recalling His Experience Playing Dumbledore

As a gamer with a deep-rooted love for all things Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment upon hearing Jude Law’s latest statement about the potential continuation of the Fantastic Beasts saga. Having grown up watching Daniel Radcliffe, Richard Harris, and Michael Gambon bring the beloved characters to life on the silver screen, I had high hopes that Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law would deliver a similar magic in the Wizarding World’s next chapter.

Five years after the final installment of the “Harry Potter” film series (specifically “The Deathly Hallows – Part 2”), Warner Bros. Pictures revisited the magical world, this time focusing on Eddie Redmayne’s character Newt Scamander in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”. Two sequels were released, both featuring Jude Law as a younger Albus Dumbledore. Initially, it was intended for the “Fantastic Beasts” movie series to span five films. However, during an interview reflecting on his role, Law hinted at uncertainty about the franchise’s future, and his comments suggest it may not continue.

As a gamer, I recently shared some insights into my magical journey in the Wizarding World during an in-depth chat with Variety, coinciding with the upcoming premiere of my movie, “The Order,” slated for limited theater screenings this December on the 2024 release calendar. While I’d jump at the chance to reprise Dumbledore again, here’s a sneak peek into what I had to share about the potential future of the Fantastic Beasts saga:

It seems to be postponed for the time being. Given that ‘Harry Potter’ is being adapted into a television series, it’s likely that they will focus their efforts there. As of now, I have not caught wind of any upcoming projects.

If things had gone as intended, I’d be eagerly waiting for the fifth Fantastic Beasts movie, set in 1945, where we’d witness the epic showdown between Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald. The duel would culminate with Dumbledore triumphing over Grindelwald, taking possession of the Elder Wand in the process. Unfortunately, that wasn’t to be as Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore didn’t perform well commercially and received mixed feedback. Rumors swirled that Warner Bros. Discovery wouldn’t carry on with the film series any longer. As Jude Law hinted, however, they’re now pouring all their energy into HBO’s Harry Potter TV series, which will retell the original books penned by J.K. Rowling.

Although the last two “Fantastic Beasts” films have been put on hold or possibly cancelled, Jude Law shared in an interview that J.K. Rowling revealed to him the entire storyline she had envisioned for Dumbledore. This included Dumbledore grappling with his self-perception as a monster and his complicated relationship with Grindelwald, which was not well-received. As Law explained:

I had a pretty clear sense of where it was going to go. … Because of Dumbledore’s past, I think he always felt guilty that he had been misled because he was in love. It followed him. He found himself to be unlovable because he trusted his heart. To play him and to really feel a sense of his extraordinary powers, I found a nice place in myself. I liked his heart, and I liked playing him because of that. I always enjoyed stepping in his shoes.

It’s possible that the tales from the last two Fantastic Beasts movies might be published in written form at some point, allowing audiences to fully grasp J.K. Rowling’s revelations to Jude Law. At this time, however, Fantastic Beasts will continue as a film trilogy, accessible with a Max subscription for streaming. If Warner Bros. should choose to produce Fantastic Beasts 4 in the future, we’ll make sure to keep you updated.

Regarding the upcoming Harry Potter television series, Francesca Gardiner has been appointed as the showrunner, while Mark Mylod serves as an executive producer and takes charge of directing several episodes. Additionally, David Heyman is also on board as an executive producer. At this point, we don’t have any information about when filming will start or when the series might be released.
