Fantastic Four: First Steps Director Teases MCU Galactus: 'Go Big or Go Home'

As a lifelong Marvel Comics fan, I couldn’t be more excited about Matt Shakman’s approach to bringing Galactus to life in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” Having grown up reading the classic stories of the Fantastic Four and their encounters with this cosmic titan, it’s heartening to hear that Shakman shares my love for the character.

Matt Shakman, the director of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” is sharing insights about the movie’s main antagonist, Galactus. Unlike previous adaptations, Shakman plans to avoid certain mistakes. Galactus, a formidable cosmic menace and an iconic Marvel Comics character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, first appeared in “Fantastic Four” #48 back in 1966. Known for posing a significant threat that could potentially involve the entire Marvel Universe, Galactus is most closely linked to the Fantastic Four and serves as their primary adversary in the upcoming MCU film. Ralph Ineson will portray this massive purple foe.

At San Diego Comic-Con, fans were given an initial glimpse of Galactus in the Hall H footage for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” Following the event, director Matt Shakman shared with Comicbook his plans to portray Galactus in grand scale. The Comic-Con sneak peek depicted Galactus examining a skyscraper from above, and Shakman expressed his enthusiasm for the character, stating, “I’m all in when it comes to Galactus. When you have Galactus, you need to go big or not at all.”

Galactus Won’t Be a Cosmic Cloud in the MCU

As a gamer, I can tell you from my experience with the Marvel universe, Galactus was once portrayed differently on the silver screen back in 2007 during “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.” Instead of his iconic giant humanoid figure with a purple pointed helmet, he was depicted as a cosmic cloud. The reason behind this change has sparked much debate.

Galactus’s heart is drawn wherever he goes, and Marvel Studios introduces a fresh take on the Silver Surfer through “Fantastic Four: First Steps.” In this adaptation, Julia Garner portrays Shalla-Bal, not Norin Radd himself. Marvel Studios looks forward to presenting a more faithful representation of Galactus, showcased in their Comic-Con drone display and suggested reading materials focusing on him. After a 18-year hiatus since “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” moviegoers will witness a Galactus embodying the grandeur of his comic book persona when “Fantastic Four: First Steps” premieres.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps
opens in theaters on July 25, 2025.
