The Fantastic Four, with John Krasinski’s Mister Fantastic being the only exception in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” have been missing from the big screen since 2015. However, this absence will soon come to an end with July’s release of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“. This new version of the team hails from a different part of the multiverse rather than the primary Marvel Universe reality. The fact that they are separate entities is what makes me excited about this upcoming update, though I understand some Marvel fans might not feel the same way.
In a conversation about the retro-futuristic style of the upcoming Marvel movie, director Shakman (known for his work on WandaVision, available on Disney+) hinted to Empire that the film will have a unique feel compared to other MCU movies. He emphasized that it won’t be filled with numerous references and appearances by other characters. Instead, he suggested a more focused narrative.
We’re each a unique cosmos, marvelous and empowering. There aren’t any other superheroes around us like in comics or movies. This universe we inhabit is self-contained – no hidden Easter eggs, no chance encounters with Iron Man or the likes. For now, this is our separate sphere. I appreciate the interconnectedness of the Marvel Universe, but here we have an opportunity to create something unique and distinct. Someday, our world may connect with others, but for the moment, we’re exploring our own little niche.
I’m genuinely thrilled about the unfolding of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”. Unlike “Deadpool & Wolverine” that could sneak in Easter eggs and cameos due to being a continuation of the X-Men universe as portrayed by 20th Century Fox, “First Steps” stands independently. It has no ties to the Fantastic Four movies from the mid-2000s directed by Tim Story or the 2015 reboot by Josh Franks.

Marvel Just Unveiled Two Key Aspects Of Fantastic Four: First Steps, And I’m Super Intrigued
Instead of focusing on Avengers: Doomsday, it’s worth noting that Fantastic Four: First Steps could be the film to reestablish Marvel in the spotlight. (According to one source)
In essence, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is starting anew, not counting its origins as adapted content. I believe it could be a fresh entry point for newcomers or those who haven’t followed the franchise closely in years. All you need to do is buy a movie ticket, find your seat, and get ready for the adventure where Marvel’s First Family confront Galactus and The Silver Surfer, saving their world.
It’s worth noting that, although the current Fantastic Four team might not always remain apart from the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, as suggested, they are set to reunite in the 2026 film “Avengers: Doomsday”. This includes Pedro Pascal portraying Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach playing Thing, and Joseph Quinn as Human Torch. There are also rumors that Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom will make a brief appearance in “First Steps”, later becoming the main antagonist in “Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. It’s even speculated that Chris Evans might join him in an unspecified role!
Currently, it’s reassuring to know that “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” stands independently. It premieres in theaters on July 25th. However, if you’re yearning for a tale with strong connections to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s no need to fret, as “Thunderbolts*” is scheduled for May 2nd.
(*Note: I don’t have access to real-time information or specific titles, so “Thunderbolts” might not be the actual title of the movie.)
