Farida Jalal expresses disappointment on not getting exciting roles; says Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher were not limited to playing only fathers

As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for the art of acting and the resilience of veteran artists, I wholeheartedly support Farida Jalal‘s quest for more challenging roles. With her rich life experience and exceptional talent, she has proven time and again that she is capable of much more than being typecast in stereotypical roles.

More recently, esteemed actress Farida Jalal appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s production, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, garnering praise for her performance and further solidifying her status as a remarkable actor. Lately, she has expressed a wish for roles with greater complexity, aiming to match the opportunities afforded to her male peers.

Faria Jalal on getting more challenging roles

In an interview with Times Of India, the actress from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge shared her wish for a complex character that would showcase her range as an actor. She’s glad to observe senior actors returning to the screen and hopes filmmakers will present her with opportunities to play roles different from those she has taken on in more recent productions.

Instead of stating that she’s waiting for a challenging role, it might be more natural to say she’s on the lookout for a demanding part that allows her to demonstrate her versatility, avoiding being stereotyped into roles like a mother or grandmother.

Farida conveyed her discontent that producers seem to limit her to the repetitive “mother” or “grandmother” roles and yearned for more thrilling assignments. She stated, “I feel it’s time for a change, let me play another mother role, another grandmother role. It’s all the same. I’m disappointed that they don’t see my potential beyond this. I want something fresh and exciting.”

She observed that she found herself in a similar position to her male peers, such as the late Amrish Puri and Anupam Kher, who were given the opportunity to portray diverse characters, ranging from villains to comedians, instead of being limited to specific roles like playing fathers or uncles.

The actress openly shared her satisfaction with the roles given to her so far, expressing gratitude for the chances she’s been given. Although she confessed to wanting larger, deeper characters, she highlighted her love for acting and her ambition to fully demonstrate her abilities in every role.

Farida Jalal on continuing her work

As a lifestyle expert, I had the privilege of being cast in the captivating web series, Heeramandi, directed by the renowned Sanjay Leela Bhansali, following my appearances in Saif Ali Khan’s Jawaani Jaaneman and Ittu Si Baat in 2020 and 2022 respectively.

During our conversation about her future endeavors, she shared some upcoming projects she plans to finish, among them being “Dua Qubool” and a film featuring the debut of late music maestro Aadesh Shrivastava’s son. Showcasing her passion for her craft, Jalal confidently stated that she intends to keep working for as long as possible.
