FBI's Latest Episode Was The Perfect Time For A Law And Order Cameo, But Jubal Would Be A Complication

As a dedicated fan who has witnessed the dynamic evolution of Dick Wolf’s TV universe for over two decades, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia whenever I see Jubal Valente (played by Jeremy Sisto) center stage on FBI. The episodes that focus on Jubal often bring about an emotional rollercoaster ride, and “Pledges” was no exception.

Spoilers ahead for Episode 5 of FBI Season 7, called “Pledges.”

In “Pledges,” the spotlight moved towards Jubal as the FBI’s main focus in the 2024 TV schedule, which typically means trouble for Jeremy Sisto’s character. The episode kicked off with an action sequence, where the team intervened on a college campus to free a woman from a group of protesters. Interestingly, he found Tyler among the detained protesters, and he used his influence with the NYPD to secure his son’s release.

By the finale of the episode, he found himself in deep trouble with Isobel and facing some tough consequences. Yet, I couldn’t help but wonder if this moment might be ripe for a guest appearance or two from Law & Order within Dick Wolf’s extensive TV empire. However, there were a couple of obstacles to consider.

Why “Pledges” Would Have Been Perfect For A Crossover

As soon as I learned that the protest was happening at Hudson University, it reminded me of Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU since I had recently labeled Hudson as the riskiest spot in Dick Wolf’s TV universe. The sight of Jubal talking to some police officers didn’t surprise me much, given it’s a common occurrence on FBI. However, an exchange at the JOC made me hope someone from Law & Order or SVU would appear.

As a gamer, I stumbled upon a heated discussion on the Hudson hashtag. It seemed like students were pointing fingers at the NYPD over the killing of one of their own. According to Kelly, there were numerous allegations of excessive force and calls for accountability. Jubal and Isobel then had this conversation:

  • Jubal: “We know the NYPD doesn’t have a ton of love for these protestors, but we really think some agro cop beat Jacob to death?”
  • Isobel: “That is a bomb we’re not willing to toss until we have evidence to back it up. And no one approach the NYPD until I’ve spoken with the commissioner.”
  • Jubal: “I would also like not to declare war on the NYPD.”

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice the intriguing connections between my favorite shows. So far this season, both “Law & Order” and “SVU” have tackled protestors’ issues, and we haven’t even reached the fall finales yet, hinting at more exciting episodes ahead in the 2025 TV schedule. Hudson University, a notorious hotspot in New York City, continues to serve as a backdrop for both shows. Furthermore, it’s not too far-fetched to dream about the CBS and NBC worlds merging, much like how Tracy Spiridakos from “Chicago P.D.” made her mark on “FBI” in 2020. The shared TV universes of the three FBI shows, the current Law & Order series, and the One Chicago shows are a testament to this potential crossover.

It turns out that both “Law & Order” and “SVU” are set in New York, just like “FBI,” so traveling wouldn’t be necessary, as was the case when “SVU” and “Chicago P.D.” crossed over previously. It wouldn’t have required a full crossover – even a brief appearance by a character from “L&O” would have been exciting. Unfortunately, Jubal would have caused complications in this episode, which can be streamed with a Paramount+ subscription.

Why Jubal Would Have Complicated Things

In my fervent admiration for the gripping world of “Law & Order” and its spin-offs, I can’t help but ponder about an intriguing point that might have complicated matters in this episode centered around Jubal. You see, the inclusion of characters from the FBI, such as those from “Law & Order” or “SVU,” could potentially stir some confusion or inconsistency, given the distinct roles and jurisdictions they represent.

In simple terms, none of the characters currently on “Law & Order” or “SVU” seem suitable for the actions required, even though Lt. Jessica Brady, played by Maura Tierney, is relatively new. Moreover, since Jubal’s story heavily involves the NYPD, it could potentially impact the “Law & Order” part of the Wolf universe if there were recurring characters, which might complicate a plotline that appears to be significant only for “FBI.

It’s clearer that Jeremy Sisto appeared regularly in the series “Law & Order” for multiple seasons before it ended, and Alana de la Garza did as well. It’s not uncommon for actors to play various characters within a TV show’s universe, and Sisto even played more than one character on “L&O.” While I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing cameos from these past roles, it might not fit well with an episode heavily centered around Jubal.

It remains to be seen if Law & Order and FBI will share a storyline someday. If characters from Dick Wolf’s New York City shows continue to attend Hudson University, I can only keep my fingers crossed for a brief appearance by one or both shows at some point. Meanwhile, it looks like a significant multi-show event – similar to the One Chicago crossover – is being planned for the near future within this TV universe.
