As I, a dedicated gamer, look ahead to the new year, I find myself reflecting on changes within the broader landscape of my digital world – specifically, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The current chairwoman, Jessica Rosenworcel, has announced her departure from the agency in 2021. In her place, fellow commissioner Brendan Carr is poised to take up the mantle when President Donald Trump officially assumes office.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Rosenworcel announced her departure from the Commission, which coincides with the presidential inauguration on January 20th.

The experience of taking the oath of office outside the agency during the peak of the pandemic, when many aspects of our daily lives shifted online, underscored the significance of the FCC’s work and emphasized the need for us to construct a digital future that benefits all.

Under Rosenworcel’s leadership, bridging the digital gap became a primary focus. This included efforts to increase broadband availability in rural areas and establish a broadband affordability program. Additionally, during her tenure, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) initiated a space bureau as part of a policy shift towards space-based communication systems.

In his new role at the FCC, Carr plans to focus on combating internet censorship and ensuring broadcasters adhere to public interest regulations. This week, he hinted that a controversy surrounding a 60 Minutes interview could potentially arise during Skydance’s acquisition of Paramount. Moreover, he encouraged other presidential candidates to voice their concerns to the FCC about Kamala Harris’ appearance on Saturday Night Live, as it might breach equal time provisions.

He might need to be patient until a fresh FCC commissioner is confirmed by the Senate, as his replacement for Rosenworcel hasn’t been appointed yet. In this scenario, the Commission would consist of two Democrats and two Republicans, resulting in a tie or stalemate.
