FCC Targets Comcast, NBCUniversal With DEI Programs Probe

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed that the current administration under President Trump seems to have its sights set on challenging diversity, fairness, and inclusivity initiatives within the media and entertainment industry, and it looks like Comcast is their latest target.

The media giant, it has been confirmed, received notice from Brendan Carr, Chair of the Federal Communications Commission, that an investigation into Comcast’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices will be initiated by his agency. “We have received an inquiry from the Federal Communications Commission and will work with them to respond to their queries,” a Comcast representative said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday.

On its official website, Comcast expresses that they firmly believe a company characterized by diversity, equity, and inclusion is not only more innovative but also more successful. They actively promote and value a wide range of backgrounds, viewpoints, cultures, and experiences within their workforce, products, and content. In collaboration with their partners, they are committed to combating injustice and discrimination against any race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability status, or military veteran status.

Carr’s letter to Comcast was earlier reported by Newsmax.

As a dedicated advocate for diversity and inclusion, I find it disheartening that some corporations are stepping back from their commitments to amplify underrepresented voices, apparently due to pressure from the U.S. government. In alignment with this shift, Disney, a company I admire for its commitment to representation, has reportedly removed references to its “Reimagine Tomorrow” initiative in a recent regulatory filing. This program, launched in 2021, aimed to amplify underrepresented voices within their media and entertainment sectors. It’s disappointing to see such initiatives being scaled back, but I remain hopeful that the importance of diversity will continue to be recognized and embraced by these companies and others moving forward.

To adhere to the President’s recent executive order on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, PBS has shut down its DEI department. As stated by a representative of PBS on February 10th, “In order to ensure full compliance with the president’s executive order, we have closed our DEI office. The staff members who were part of this department are no longer with PBS.

The current Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman, who was appointed by President Trump, has announced his intention to examine PBS and NPR, organizations that receive public funding, to determine whether they’ve breached regulations concerning the disclosure of financial backers during their broadcasts.

In January, following Trump’s executive order titled “Ending Biased and Unnecessary Government Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Programs,” Carr instructed the FCC to cease its own DEI initiatives. He stated that promoting unfair discrimination contradicts the Communications Act, infringes on Americans’ rights to equal treatment under the law, and unnecessarily drains taxpayer resources, as written in his official statement.
