Prepare yourself for a genuine fright! It seems that R.L. Stine and Netflix’s collaboration is thriving, and they are persistently focusing on their winning streak in the adult-oriented horror genre. The Netflix Fear Street film trilogy has successfully transformed R.L. Stine’s teen horror book series of the same name from the printed page to the silver screen.
Instead of maintaining the teen-friendly ghost tales, the producers opted to transition the narratives into the “R” rated realm. This strategic move has proven beneficial for the iconic series, as evidenced by the upcoming horror film, “Fear Street: Prom Queen”, which continues the trend set by its predecessors. The future of the series looks promising for both Stine enthusiasts and horror aficionados alike.
The “Goosebumps” series, initially introduced in 1989, were specifically designed with teenagers in mind, thus minimizing the level of grisly details and intense violence. Contrastingly, the movies don’t adhere to these guidelines.
The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has officially bestowed the “R” rating on the series Fear Street: Prom Queen, a decision that should draw fans back to its gruesome storyline and hints at a promising future for the next three confirmed Fear Street movies. This highly-coveted rating is due to the MPA’s assessment of “intense gore, teen drug use, strong language, and sexual content” as reported by Bloody Disgusting, making every horror enthusiast excited.
Although a trailer for the upcoming Netflix movie hasn’t been released yet, given that it’s set to premiere later in 2021 and has already received its rating, fans can look forward to seeing a preview soon. Currently, the formal summary indicates:
Greetings once more to Shadyside! In the latest chapter of the gruesome Fear Street series, it’s time for the much-anticipated prom at Shadyside High. The school’s clique of popular girls, known as the wolfpack, is up to their usual blend of sweetness and viciousness as they compete for the throne. However, things take a sinister turn when an audacious newcomer gets nominated to the court, and the other girls mysteriously vanish. The class of ’88 is now bracing themselves for a prom night like no other!
More Blood, More Screams, More Fear
Initially, the first three “Fear Street” movies featuring Sadie Sink and Kiana Madeira lived up to their “R” rating, as a character met a gruesome end involving a bread cutter. The fourth movie, bridging the gap between “Fear Street: 1994” and “Fear Street: 1978”, is set to continue the carnage with additional deaths and amplified fear.
Matt Palmer, the director of Netflix’s Calibre, is set to helm the fourth installment in the franchise, titled The Prom Queen, which is based on Stine’s 15th novel in his teen series. Co-written with Donald McLeary, this film, rated “R,” promises to feature more graphic violence. An impressive cast, including India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Chris Klein, Lili Taylor, and Katherine Waterston, will contribute convincing screams.
Although the official launch date for “Fear Street: Prom Queen” hasn’t been specified yet, given that it’s scheduled to come out this year, a release around Halloween would make it quite fitting.
