Film Academy Donates $250,000 From Canceled Oscar Nominees Luncheon to Fire Relief (Exclusive)

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided to give the $250,000 they had set aside for this year’s Oscar Nominees Luncheon (which was canceled on Monday) to the Motion Picture & Television Fund instead. This donation will be used to aid Los Angeles residents who have been impacted by the current wildfires.

As a result of its efforts, the Academy’s donations towards the MPTF’s wildfire relief initiatives now amount to $1 million in total. The Academy is a non-profit organization, while the MPTF, deeply rooted in Hollywood since 1921, is a well-known part of the community.

Or more concisely:

The Academy has raised its contributions for the MPTF’s wildfire relief to $1 million, with the non-profit organization being a key player in Hollywood since 1921.

For more than a week, destructive wildfires have taken the lives of many Los Angeles residents and reduced countless homes to ashes, among them being the main dwellings of four out of the 55 board members from the Academy who oversee its operations.

Contrary to some reports suggesting otherwise, I, as a dedicated fan, want to clarify that while changes have been made to various Oscar-related events due to sensitivity towards the SoCal community, which houses about 60% of its 10,000 members, the 97th Oscars ceremony itself, scheduled for March 2nd, remains on track and will proceed as planned.

Beyond the Academy, various organizations in the industry hosting award ceremonies have also shown their support for fire relief efforts. For instance, the Recording Academy announced that the Grammys on February 2 will function as a fundraiser, while the Producers Guild of America mentioned they’ll contribute a part of the earnings from the Producers Guild Awards on February 8 to the Entertainment Community Fund. Lastly, SAG-AFTRA – the organization behind the SAG Awards scheduled for February 23 – declared their intent to donate $1 million to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, their philanthropic division.
