When Jacob Jordan from Mejuri encountered filmmaker Gia Coppola and the creative team at The Directors Bureau, it was a highly harmonious and enjoyable meeting, much like what young people would describe as incredibly fitting or perfect.

Upon meeting, we instantly developed a profound creative and personal affinity,” the jewelry company’s chief brand officer shared with The Hollywood Reporter. “It seemed as if I was catching up with a long-known group of friends. Our thoughts naturally synced on challenging traditional marketing norms, crafting compelling narratives, and redefining the concept of a ‘campaign.’

As a passionate gamer, I’m excited to announce the birth of a fresh project: Mejuri’s new series titled “A New York Minute“. This isn’t just any ordinary series; it’s a collection of “microfilms” that breathe life into the Mejuri tale, presenting it as an engaging narrative with Francis Ford Coppola steering the ship. The story unfolds through the eyes of a group of vibrant young female friends, with our stunning jewelry pieces taking on supporting roles. This collaboration is a testament to the creative surge we’re seeing from fashion brands like Gucci and Saint Laurent, who are innovatively transforming their campaigns into everything from short films to episodic content.

Mejuri’s series highlights genuine friendships, showcasing everyday experiences that unexpectedly uncover the extraordinary in ordinary situations. This series stars Laura Love, Rebecca Ressler, Natalie Vall-Freed, and Rozzi Crane, all in their thirties. The initial episode, titled “The Supermarket,” premieres today, depicting the friends’ shopping spree before a weekend vacation. Subsequent episodes will be released on September 23rd and 30th respectively.

Jordan added, ‘Gia transformed this idea into reality by combining artistic flair, authenticity, and a touch of relatability.’ She was an ideal collaborator, demonstrating exceptional collaboration, deliberate decision-making, and a natural affinity for the women and situations portrayed in each episode.

For Coppola, fresh from the global debut of her new movie titled The Last Showgirl, featuring Pamela Anderson, at the Toronto International Film Festival, she drew inspiration from her family’s past by referencing short films created by her late grandmother, Eleanor Coppola. These works, described as reflective pieces that allow subjects to feel alive, echo the style of A New York Minute. “I admire the way she captures the world by focusing on the minor details in life we tend to ignore,” Coppola says about her grandmother’s films. “The textures and sounds that become apparent when we are fully engaged with our surroundings.

In the production of this series, Coppola collaborated with cinematographer Jody Lee Lipes (notably from “Manchester by the Sea”), and they chose to film on 16mm to enhance an “artful realism”. To further elaborate, Coppola exposed the actresses to circumstances and scenes that served as a foundation for life events, thereby adding depth to the scenes without relying heavily on a conventional script. According to Mejuri, these situations were presented with “no defined context or resolution, but rather a longing for more”.

Coppola expresses that they’ve crafted something intricate and thought-provoking, pushing boundaries within advertising. It’s a joy for them to collaborate with loved ones, and this project honors their grandmother’s pioneering work in film. With more ideas than could fit into just a handful of episodes, it seems this collaboration is only the start of a prosperous and creatively rich journey.
