According to experts, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth has been very successful on Steam. Even though it was released nearly a year after its debut on the PlayStation 5, this massive role-playing game from Square Enix dominated the rankings when it launched on PC.
According to Circana’s Mat Piscatella, Rebirth enjoyed a terrific debut on Steam. In fact, this Game of the Year (GOTY) nominee at The Game Awards was the top-selling game during the week ending on January 25 in the United States.
As a devoted fan, I couldn’t help but be thrilled when I learned that the double pack featuring Rebirth and its precursor, Final Fantasy VII Remake, ranked third on the sales charts!
In May, it became public knowledge that Square Enix was planning to significantly shift away from exclusive platform releases due to modest sales for some key projects over the past years. This change included the game Rebirth, which didn’t even manage to rank among the Top 20 best-selling games in April 2024, only two months after its launch on February 29.
The poor sales of the game, “Rebirth,” furthered a disheartening pattern in Japan for the Final Fantasy series. A new release from Final Fantasy was once a significant event; however, it seemed Rebirth didn’t garner much attention. This lackluster reception convinced Square that keeping the franchise exclusive to PlayStation 5 for some time wasn’t beneficial.
At its initial PC launch, Rebirth reached a high of more than 40,000 simultaneous players on January 25th, as indicated by SteamDB data. Currently, approximately 20,000 players continue to engage with the game, demonstrating that player retention is relatively strong too.
If you haven’t experienced the second installment of the Final Fantasy VII remake series yet, you’re in store for a delightful adventure! In our assessment, we noted that the combat system is innovative and engaging, offering a wealth of rewarding content. This content is strategically divided between the primary narrative and additional missions, ensuring that you’ll be captivated for numerous hours.
Those yet to join the party are primarily Xbox users, as neither Remake nor Rebirth have been released on Series platforms, not even through Game Pass. There’s speculation that time might bring these games to other platforms, such as Nintendo Switch 2, if the rumors about a port prove true. This could potentially mean Nintendo fans may get access before Xbox users.
