The original, though not exactly a box office smash in its day, has since grown into a cult classic, much like fine wine matures over time.
It’s not something we anticipated for our 2024 bingo list, but by now, we’re used to unexpected events. As reported by Variety, Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk have agreed to pen a reboot of the classic ’90s horror-comedy, “Idle Hands”. Jason Reitman will produce this film, reuniting the team after their work on the latest Ghostbusters movies and Reitman’s biographical comedy, Saturday Night.
Discussions have been held with Wolfhard and Bryk about directing the remake of Idle Hands, following the acclaim of their recent release, Hell of a Summer, which was warmly received at TIFF in 2023 and will be distributed more broadly by Neon starting next year. The movie revolves around counselors preparing Camp Pineway for the arrival of campers when a mysterious killer in a mask starts murdering staff members.
The announcement of “Idle Hands” arrives when Wolfhard and Bryk are aiming to redefine the genre of teenage horror movies by portraying a truer image of contemporary youth. At the debut of “Hell of a Summer” the previous year, Wolfhard essentially expressed that if you want something done correctly, you must take charge, resulting in the production of his slasher film and now, a 90’s remake.

The film “Idle Hands“, starring Sawa as Anton Tobias, revolves around his teenage stoner characters whose hand becomes possessed and embarks on a violent spree, even after it’s severed from its owner. Made with a budget of $25 million, it sadly only earned $4.2 million at the box office. However, over time, it has gained cult-classic status, despite its 16% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Remaking such an oddball title might seem unusual, but we suppose that Wolfhard, Bryk, and Reitman have a clear vision for it, don’t they?
Sawa expressed his opinion about the news on X through social media, saying: “‘If anyone should do this, it ought to be those two great guys. All the best, fellows.’” This comment sparked a range of reactions from his massive fan base, with many expressing their desire for him to appear in the remake. Some were less appreciative, questioning the necessity of a remake and even suggesting that it was unnecessary to change perfection. Regardless of your opinion towards a potential remake of ‘Idle Hands’, it’s indisputable that Wolfhard, Bryk, and Reitman will strive to preserve its heritage while simultaneously offering something novel for contemporary viewers in the 21st century. Although we may not consider the original as flawless, it was entertaining in its own right, and it’s easy to imagine a revamped version providing some witty social critique on how much the world has changed since 1999.
