As a devoted fan of “Fire Country,” I can’t help but feel that the show is missing out on a golden opportunity by not fully utilizing the character of Freddy Mills. With his charm, loyalty, and down-to-earth wisdom, he was the heart and soul of the first season, providing a much-needed anchor amidst the soap opera-level drama swirling around everyone else.
One skill Fire Country excels at is unexpectedly letting go of beloved characters. In the firefighting drama, Fiona Rene’s Rebecca Lee departed early, but another character who bid farewell as the series entered its second season was W. Tré Davis portraying Freddy Mills. A regular in Season 1, Freddy is a close friend and confidant to Max Thieriot’s Bode at the Three Rock Conservation Camp. He swiftly became everyone’s favorite hero, earning the nickname “Goat.” As a convict firefighter, Freddy saved many lives, but unlike Bode, he was wrongfully imprisoned. It wasn’t until the conclusion of the first season that Freddy was cleared of his charges, after which he didn’t hesitate to move on from Edgewater.
In “Fire Country,” Freddy was never treated quite fairly. Beyond being Bode’s best friend at Three Rock, Freddy was the soul of the series. While other characters were drowning in soapy drama, constantly tipping their lives out of balance, Freddy was the reliable confidant who always knew what to say. He’s the kind of friend everyone needs and demonstrates unwavering loyalty until the very end. Even when it seemed like he and Bode had drifted apart for a while, it turned out to be part of a plan to expose a hidden drug ring at Three Rock.
In the second season of the series “Fire Country”, they wrote Freddy out, moving him to Southern California while his best friend was incarcerated up north. Although he returned for the finale episode titled “I Do”, it seemed odd that he would abandon his friend during difficult times, which didn’t align with the image of the character we had come to know.
Freddy could return in Season 3
If “Fire Country” organizes its third season effectively, Freddy Mills could return to his significant position in Bode’s life, offering him the appropriate advice needed to steer his life back on course. As Bode grapples with finding his place once more in this world, a family figure like Freddy might provide the necessary counsel. With Season 3 set to introduce some fresh characters, now would be the perfect moment to officially reintegrate Freddy into the storyline.
Based on current information, it appears that Bode will be joining Cal Fire in Southern California alongside newcomer Camden Casey, portrayed by Jared Padalecki, who was previously known for “Supernatural.” This situation could offer a suitable opportunity to reintroduce Freddy into Bode’s life. As we know, the Mills family—Freddy, his wife Cookie (Katrina Reynolds), and their child—reside in Los Angeles, with Freddy managing his own business there. By having Bode stay with Freddy’s family or frequently visiting them, the show could potentially reignite the connection that has been absent since the first season.
Instead of focusing mainly on further escapades involving Bode and Gabriela (Stephanie Arcila) in the upcoming CBS series, it would be more beneficial for the show to provide Bode with some independent growth. Even though Freddy suggested that he pursue his girlfriend at the end of Season 2, perhaps spending time apart will make the firefighter realize why the relationship between him and Gabriela should remain over. This break could also help Bode value the loyal friends who have supported him throughout.
