First Look at Cillian Murphy in Netflix Movie ‘Steve,’ a Reimagining of Max Porter’s Best-Seller ‘Shy’

Netflix unveiled the initial glimpse of Cillian Murphy starring in the upcoming film titled “Steve,” which is based on Max Porter’s critically acclaimed short novel, “Shy.

Following his Berlinale premiere of “The Thing With Feathers,” Oscar-winning actor Murphy takes on the role of a school principal in the movie “Steve,” directed by Tim Mielants. A recently unveiled image shows him casually leaning against a chalkboard, holding a tennis ball.

In October, I’m eagerly anticipating the release of a movie that chronicles a single day in the lives of Steve and his students at a school serving as a last hope for troubled youth, set against a backdrop of a society that seems to have abandoned them.

In the storyline, Steve is depicted as he battles to preserve the school’s honor and prevent its shutdown. Simultaneously, we observe him dealing with personal mental health issues. Meanwhile, we are introduced to Shy (Jay Lycurgo), a young man wrestling with his own past and future uncertainties as he attempts to reconcile his internal vulnerability with his inclination towards self-harm and aggression.”

Or more concisely:

“The narrative unfolds with Steve’s efforts to save the school from closing, while also battling personal mental health struggles. Simultaneously, we encounter Shy (Jay Lycurgo), a troubled teen grappling with his past and future as he navigates his inner fragility and destructive impulses.

Actors Tracey Ullman (“The Tracey Ullman Show,” “Mrs. America”), Simbi Ajikawo (“Top Boy”) and Emily Watson (“Breaking the Waves,” “Small Things Like These”) have been unveiled as part of the main ensemble.

Joining the cast are Douggie McMeekin, Youssef Kerkour, Luke Ayres, Joshua J Parker, Araloyin Oshunremi, Tut Nyuot, Tom Moya, Ahmed Ismail, Joshua Barry, Archie Fisher, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Priyanga Burford, George Fouracres, Marcus Garvey, Ruby Ashbourne-Serkis, and Roger Allam. These new faces will be joining the ensemble.

Steve will release in select U.K. theaters and on Netflix on Oct. 3.
