First look at Netflix & Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein revealed at last

As a lifelong fan of horror and Gothic literature, I am beyond excited for what Guillermo del Toro has in store for us with his upcoming adaptation of Frankenstein. Having grown up on classics like The Shape of Water and Pan’s Labyrinth, it’s thrilling to know that the mastermind behind these timeless tales is finally bringing his vision of Mary Shelley’s enduring novel to life.

Modern movie directors such as Robert Eggers and Guillermo del Toro are giving due recognition to timeless horror figures by breathing fresh life into them. With Eggers’ version of Dracula and del Toro’s rendition of Frankenstein in production, we’re on the brink of a revival of the Gothic genre at its finest. Although teasers for Eggers’ adaptation of Nosferatu have been released, set to hit cinemas this Christmas, details about del Toro’s enigmatic ‘Frankenstein’, inspired by Mary Shelley’s original 1818 novel, are just starting to surface. Following the wrap of production in October, audiences have eagerly anticipated more information on this secretive film, and Vanity Fair has now shared some tantalizing insights.

Just shared some initial set photos from upcoming 2025 releases, including a glimpse of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein production with its Gothic backdrop that promises to echo the film’s anticipated ambiance. The movie adaptation of Shelley’s timeless tale features Oscar Isaac as the genius yet deranged doctor who births Frankenstein, portrayed by Jacob Elordi from Saltburn. Besides an intriguing cast and director, the captivating sets are a sight to behold.

The director of “Pan’s Labyrinth,” Guillermo del Toro, shared with VF the significance of practical sets in achieving the eerie atmosphere of the movie. As reported by VF, most of the dark tale unfolds within the vestiges of past grandeur, according to del Toro. In his pursuit for suitable sets, he encountered several places that seemed suspiciously haunted, but he expressed to VF that filming in ruins effectively communicates a Gothic narrative, particularly one centered around creation and destruction.

Gothic romances emerged, in part, from a deep-seated appreciation for ruins. At times, these decaying structures can be even more captivating than fully intact buildings due to the contrast between construction and decay.

Known for crafting visually haunting and magical images throughout his career, the innovative mind behind contemporary masterpieces such as “The Shape of Water” is now ready to bring his long-cherished Gothic vision to life on screen. Though he’s been infusing Gothic elements into his work for many years, other filmmakers have also contributed to the resurgence of Gothic cinema in the 21st century. Director Robert Eggers, for instance, is a prime example of a modern filmmaker rejuvenating the genre with films like “The Lighthouse,” which features Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe in leading roles.

Despite the fact that Crimson Peak didn’t perform well at the box office, del Toro maintains that while many Gothic films contain horror elements, they shouldn’t be labeled as pure horror. Del Toro has a deep affection for the enchantingly eerie atmosphere that Gothic stories and visuals create, so viewers can anticipate his Frankenstein to explore themes beyond just the terror of a man composed from dead tissue.

Del Toro’s upcoming movie boasts an impressive cast that includes Mia Goth, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery, Charles Dance, Felix Kammerer, and Christoph Waltz, making it a highly anticipated production. As of now, Netflix hasn’t announced a release date, but the film is currently undergoing post-production. We can expect more information about its launch soon.
