Five Nights at Freddys 2's Matthew Lillard Reveals When Sequel Filming Begins

As a seasoned cinephile who’s seen my fair share of horror films, I can confidently say that the upcoming sequel to “Five Nights at Freddy’s”, titled “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2”, has me genuinely excited. Having grown up playing the original video game series and being a fan of the first movie, it’s heartening to know that production is underway.

The main character from the successful horror film “Five Nights at Freddy’s” has announced that filming for its follow-up, “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2”, will start this October, which coincides with Halloween. Originally premiered on demand in October 2023 by Universal Pictures, the movie quickly gained popularity and was adored by fans when it was also shown in U.S. theaters simultaneously. It raked in a staggering $300 million globally, prompting plans for a sequel due out in 2025.

In an interview with ComicBook at New York Comic-Con on October 17th, I, who portrayed the antagonist in the initial movie, shared that production for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 was set to kick off in just ten days from then – making the filming date fall on October 27th. During a chat with Collider, I revealed that I’ve gone through the script and my scenes are scheduled to be filmed in November, expressing my excitement for the upcoming filming.

This morning, I received a text about our planned dates. They start in early November and continue for a while. I can hardly wait! The script looks amazing to me.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is one of the most iconic video game series, and director Emma Tammi said recently that she drew inspiration from Steven Spielberg and the Joker movie to adapt it for the big screen. She collaborated with game developer Scott Cawthon to bring his popular video game to life for Blumhouse and teamed with him once more to helm the sequel that is reportedly filming in Chalmette, Louisiana. The state’s entertainment website lists a project titled Music Box that is scheduled to shoot from October 28, 2024, to January 31, 2025. Fans connected this to the second game, as a music box is used to keep the killer puppet at bay.

Josh Hutcherson, known for his role in “The Hunger Games”, takes on a new challenge as a beleaguered security guard named Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza in “Five Nights at Freddy’s”. On his inaugural night, he realizes that surviving the work shift will prove more challenging than anticipated, since he is tormented by the murderous animatronic characters within the pizzeria. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, the film grossed an impressive $291 million worldwide. This PG-13 mystery thriller stands as one of Blumhouse’s highest-earning productions, outperforming “Split” (2016) which made $278 million at the global box office.

“As I sat down with Collider, I couldn’t help but feel the buzz surrounding this legendary venture that’s captivating a fresh audience. I can’t deny it, I’m just as thrilled as everyone else! The specifics about the cast and storyline for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 are still under wraps, but I can confirm that Josh Hutcherson is coming back to the scene.

The entire team is outstanding, and I’m eager for our return. I believe we picked up valuable insights during the first movie, which I feel will significantly contribute to the second one. Needless to say, we’re all thrilled about the current state of the project.

In August, Jason Blum, the head of Blumhouse Productions, hinted at the development of a sequel by posting on social media: “Jim Henson’s Creature Shop is working their enchantment once more! We aren’t certain what they’re working on, but we know it will be fantastic!” The post featured an image of someone crafting an animatronic. Later, Cawthon shared four pages from the sequel script on social media, but he hinted that only one of them was genuine. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter) in August: “It’s up to the fanbase to figure out which page is TRUE.

The sequel to Five Nights at Freddy’s, titled Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, is scheduled for release on December 5, 2025. If you are a subscriber to Peacock or Prime Video, you can currently stream the original movie. The film is available in high-quality formats such as 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD.
