As a seasoned gamer who’s witnessed countless moments of sportsmanship and camaraderie, I must say that Flavor Flav’s gesture towards Jordan Chiles at the 2024 MTV Music Video Awards was nothing short of heartwarming. In an era where controversy often overshadows the spirit of competition, Flav managed to bring a sense of justice and empathy to a situation that left many feeling disheartened.
At the 2024 MTV Music Video Awards, Olympian Jordan Chiles was moved by a heartfelt action from Flavor Flav.
As I stood alongside Chiles during our presentation of the award for best collaboration at Fortnight (which went to Taylor Swift and Post Malone), Flav seized the opportunity to bring up a heated topic. “Let’s take a brief moment to transform this into an Olympic-style conversation, if you don’t mind,” he said, referring to the gymnast’s bronze medal controversy.
Addressing Chiles, he said, “I understand they tried to take your medal, but let me tell you something – there’s a gift they can’t strip away from you.” The audience erupted in applause as Flav handed over a personalized bronze clock adorned with bling, reminiscent of his own unique fashion piece. Once tied around the athlete’s neck, Chiles was visibly moved and exclaimed, “I don’t know what to say!

Gina, Chiles’ mom, posted a tweet expressing her approval of Flav’s gift to Chiles. Her message read: “My son @ChilesJordan is having a blast at the @vmas! You did an excellent job presenting with @FlavorFlav and receiving the bronze clock. Now you’re dancing with @taylorswift13 and looking stunning! That smile tells it all! So incredibly happy for you.
Initially, the athlete received a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics following an appeal by her coach, Cecile Landi, during the August 5 floor exercise final. Nevertheless, the Court of Arbitration for Sport determined that the U.S. team submitted their appeal four seconds past the one-minute deadline. Consequently, the bronze medal had to be returned and awarded instead to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu.
After CAS made their ruling, Chiles expressed her feelings on social media. In a post, she said, “I am at a loss for words. This decision seems unfair and has dealt a heavy blow, not just to me, but to those who have supported my endeavor. To make matters worse, I’ve been subjected to unwarranted racial slurs online, which are both wrong and deeply painful. I have invested so much of myself into this sport, and I am immensely proud to embody my culture and nation.
In a past post on X (previously known as Twitter), Flavor Flav hinted at creating a “bronze clock pendant” as a prize for an Olympic athlete, expressing his enthusiastic backing for those competing in the 2024 Paris Games.
Hey there @ChilesJordan! I’m planning to create a unique bronze clock necklace just for you. No one else will have this piece! If you’re interested, feel free to reach out to me through your friend. I’ve got you covered!
