Marvel could be leaning in an indie direction.
According to Florence Pugh, Thunderbolts seems to be unlike typical Marvel films as she expressed during a recent group interview with cast and crew. She shared this sentiment with Empire magazine.
Pugh described the film as developing into a gritty, cool-as-a-cucumber independent film with an A24 vibe, featuring Marvel superheroes.
As a gamer, I was tasked with crafting a unique experience for Thunderbolts. Similar to my work on the Netflix show Beef, produced by A24, there’s an undercurrent of that emotional tone in this project too. It’s not your run-of-the-mill action movie – it’s darker and more resonant, but I made sure to infuse humor without compromising its emotional depth.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “I’m diving into the action-packed world of ‘Thunderbolts’, where an unorthodox band of renegades join forces for a government assignment. The crew includes Yelena Belova (Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) and John Walker (Wyatt Russell).
Pugh further explained the connection between her character and Bob, portrayed by Lewis Pullman. “Yelena recognizes pieces of herself in him,” she stated. “She’s always been a person who cares for others. She has a soft spot for him, and essentially enjoys taking care of him because he’s rather helpless. He’s completely helpless.
Following Neon’s film Anora triumphing at the Oscars with five wins, including Best Picture, Pugh expresses that the Marvel edition resembling indie cinema could well be a trend for the future. In his acceptance speech at the Spirit Awards last month, Anora’s director, Sean Baker, highlighted the challenges faced by independent cinema and suggested necessary changes. “The current system needs to evolve,” Baker said, “because this situation is not sustainable. We are generating employment and revenue for the entire industry, yet we barely scrape by. Creatives associated with long-term projects should be receiving larger initial payments, as relying on back end earnings is no longer feasible. It’s time for us to demand change.
The movie, titled “Thunderbolts“, is being brought to you by Kevin Feige as the producer, along with Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, and Jason Tamez serving in executive roles. This action-packed film is set to hit theaters on May 2nd.
