In an unexpected turn of events, one of the most distinctive animated films in recent years, made independently without dialogue, won the Best Picture – Animated accolade at this year’s 82nd Annual Golden Globes. This silent production, which narrates the tale of a group of animals battling to survive a devastating flood, outshone heavyweights like Disney and Pixar to claim the award. Director and writer Gints Zilbalodis applauded his team’s creativity and expressed gratitude towards the Golden Globes for recognizing their “little cat movie.
Hailing from a locale with minimal film production, this movie was crafted by a tiny, spirited group of novices brimming with enthusiasm. It’s our debut appearance at this venue, making it an exceptionally significant milestone for us Latvians.
This story holds special significance as it reflects my past experience of working independently, producing all my movies single-handedly. However, for the first time, I joined forces with a team, much like the cat in Flow had to learn trust and collaboration. Just as we had to set aside our differences to make this film, I believe it’s crucial to remember these lessons in today’s world more than ever before. I appreciate your support for our collaborative cat movie.
Under the guidance of Gints Zilbalodis as both writer and director, the film titled “Flow ” (known as “Straume” in Latvian) outperformed heavyweights such as “Moana 2“, “Inside Out 2“, “Memoir of a Snail, The Wild Robot, “, and “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl“.
