As a long-time Disney enthusiast who has traversed the magical kingdoms of Florida and California countless times, I must say that I applaud Disney World for their continuous efforts to modernize and update their attractions with cultural sensitivity in mind.

Regardless of Magic Kingdom’s classic Peter Pan’s Flight ride using older technology, you’d be hard-pressed to find queues as lengthy anywhere in Disney World. The ride turns the traditional dark ride concept on its head, with vehicles suspended above ground, giving the illusion of flying through the air like Peter Pan. Excitingly, this popular attraction has resumed operations today after a period of refurbishment, and visitors will observe a noticeable improvement.

According to Attractions Magazine, there’s an update to the scene in the Never Land Tribe and Tiger Lily ride. Originally, the scene showed the tribe gathered near a fire, looking serious as some beat drums. However, the new version offers a fresh take on this scene.

In the latest edition, we find Tiger Lily and her elder relative participating in their tribe’s festive harvest gathering. These two characters are depicted as they gracefully dance, achieved by positioning their figurines on a rotating platform.

Disney Experiences has recently made a strategic update to modernize older attractions, ensuring they align with contemporary cultural standards. For instance, Splash Mountain was transformed into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, while The World Famous Jungle Cruise underwent significant changes to eliminate African tribal characters and the figure of Trader Sam.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed that not every update in the gaming world goes down smoothly with fellow enthusiasts. Changes are frequent, and while some may embrace them, others can’t help but voice their disapproval. The recent transformation of Splash Mountain is a perfect example; it sparked an outpouring of anger from fans that hasn’t subsided yet, even after the decision has been made. However, the Magic Kingdom’s Tiana’s Bayou Adventure has already opened its doors to us. And just last weekend at D23, we learned that the Disneyland version is set to debut in November.

The depiction of the Native American-inspired characters in Peter Pan has been a controversial case for a while. The fact that Disney World is now calling them the “Never Land Tribe” is particularly telling, considering in Peter Pan the movie they are referred to as “Injuns.” Watching the movie on Disney+ today viewers are met with a disclaimer before the film begins due to the insensitive depiction of the characters. It’s not a shock at all that this change was made.

Once modifications like these are implemented in one amusement park, it’s just a question of time before they appear in any other park with identical attractions, and that seems to be true here as well. Disney has announced that the rides featuring Peter Pan’s Flight at Disneyland (California) and Disneyland Paris will undergo similar upgrades, but no specific date for these changes has been provided.
