Foo Fighters Part Ways With Drummer Josh Freese

Drummer Josh Freese announced via Instagram that he has left The Foo Fighters, a position he took over from Taylor Hawkins two years ago following his passing.

On Monday evening, Foo Fighters contacted me to inform me that they’re choosing a new drummer, as they’ve decided to take a different path. No explanation was provided. Nevertheless, I had a great time during the last two years with them, both on and off stage, and I wish them success in whatever choice they believe is best for their band.”

A spokesperson for the Foo Fighters hasn’t yet given a comment regarding Freese’s dismissal, and it remains undecided who will be the band’s new drummer. The Foo Fighters have scheduled their first performance of 2025 for October, and they plan to play at the Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix during that time.

Approximately a year after Hawkins’ passing during the Foo Fighters’ tour in South America, it was revealed that Freese had joined the band as their new drummer. Beyond his work with the Foo Fighters, Freese has also been drumming for Devo since 1996 and has collaborated with bands such as Guns n’ Roses and Nine Inch Nails.

Over the past four decades, I’ve been fortunate enough to drum professionally without ever being dismissed from a band. Yet, last Friday, I found myself unexpectedly parting ways with the Foo Fighters – I’m not filled with rage, just taken aback and disheartened. However, as many of you know, I’ve always embraced the freelance lifestyle and jumped between projects, so I’m doing well. Keep an eye out for my “Top 10 plausible reasons Josh was kicked from the Foo Fighters” list!
