As a longtime fan who’s witnessed Andy Samberg’s SNL glory days, I must say his recent comeback has been nothing short of delightful. His latest digital short, “Here I Go,” was an instant hit and a hilarious reprisal of the iconic “Dick In A Box.” The best part? The almost-wardrobe malfunction that could have given a whole new meaning to the song!
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice that despite Andy Samberg not hosting Saturday Night Live during its historic 50th season, he seems to be living in a never-ending sequence of glory days. His recent involvement in viral skits and his satirical take on the Olympics, reminiscent of Weekend Update, on Late Night With Seth Meyers, has been nothing short of entertaining. Most recently, he graced Charli XCX’s episode with an uproarious digital short titled “Here I Go,” which, in a twist of humor, could almost have been named “Dick Out Of The Shorts” instead of a revival of the legendary “Dick In A Box.
In this short film, Andy Samberg portrays a character who frequently sings and dances at home, accusing neighbors of criminal activities. The catchy tune is even more amusing because Charli XCX collaborates on it later in the track. Interestingly, Samberg himself revealed that he narrowly avoided an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction during the video shoot. In his own words:
There was much discussion about the appropriate length of my shorts. I often found myself saying, “Charli’s are quite high because that’s her style. So, mine should be too.” Then I pondered, “Should I copy her exact outfit?” After a moment, I thought, “Probably not, as I don’t believe people genuinely want to see that, despite what some might assume.” Finally, I decided, “Let’s just raise them a bit more.” When they did, I wondered, “Maybe I should go even higher,” but when we began to dance, I almost exposed too much. I quickly exclaimed, “Oh no!
Thank goodness this segment wasn’t live! While speaking on The Lonely Island And Seth Meyers Podcast this week, Samberg recalls the conversation around the matching red shorts he wears with Charli XCX later in the song when the duo dance in the streets to “Here I Go.” As he recalled, because the pop singer (who has coined “brat summer” with her viral album) wore some short shorts, he was following her lead, but at one point when he started getting down with Charli and the other dancers, fear started to kick in regarding how much he was revealing.
I was like, ‘Oh, thank God we did not make it any higher cause it would have been really bad.’
Success achieved! Despite a close call with awkwardness, “Here I Go” has been a smash hit since its release a fortnight ago, garnering 1.7 million views on YouTube and countless amusing responses. One viewer commented, “This is the HOA Anthem,” while another exclaimed, “this shouldn’t be such a catchy tune.” Many more fans are simply thrilled to see Andy Samberg back on the show frequently for Season 50, following his extended absence from the series where he built a strong reputation. And it’s been an exciting time for the sketch comedy show, particularly with Ariana Grande’s Domingo sketch taking off as a cultural phenomenon.
Apart from his amusing “Here I Go” skit, Andy Samberg has been a frequent guest in almost every episode of Season 50. Notably, he portrayed Doug Emhoff, Kamala Harris’ husband, during times when the presidential election outcomes were still uncertain. You can now watch the most recent episodes of Saturday Night Live with a Peacock subscription, and eagerly await the upcoming episode hosted by Paul Mescal on December 7th.
