Former ‘Bachelorette’ Star Katie Thurston Reveals Breast Cancer Diagnosis: “Waiting on Learning What Stage”

Katie Thurston, a former contestant on ‘The Bachelor’ and lead of ‘The Bachelorette’, announced that she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

On Saturday, Thurston shared on Instagram her recent news. “Personal update: I’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer,” she wrote in the caption. “Seeing all the couples posting their Valentine’s Day celebrations made me feel a little envious, if I’m being honest.” She continued, “Jeff had planned a trip to Hawaii for us, followed by traveling the world together before settling down in NYC. But instead, my Valentine’s Day was spent arranging new living arrangements as I need to return to LA for more tests and treatment.

She continued by detailing her holiday activities which primarily involved arranging medical check-ups and collaborating with her team to devise a chemotherapy strategy. Thurston shared that since learning the news, she has felt a range of emotions such as “denial,” but what’s been beneficial for her is connecting with other women who have faced similar situations.

As a fellow gamer (and someone who’s been through a similar journey), I sought out narratives from others like me – young women battling breast cancer, specifically Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, and going through mastectomy. Pregnancy after breast cancer was another common thread in these stories. Hearing their experiences provided comfort and strength, so I hope to pay it forward by sharing mine too. This is the beginning of my journey, and it’s a long one. The first step – accepting my reality – was tough, but I’m ready to face this challenge head-on.

She ended by expressing gratitude towards her fiancé, Jeff Arcuri, for his assistance: “I’m not sure I could manage this without your help.

On a recent Instagram post (made over the weekend), Thurston mentioned that she’s currently waiting for updates about the stage of her condition, and she intends to undergo another biopsy for further details. Additionally, she noted that there is no record of breast cancer in her family history.

Initially, Thurston emerged during Matt James’ season of The Bachelor in 2021, but her journey ended in week six. Later in the same year, she took on the role of The Bachelorette and accepted Blake Moynes’ proposal. Regrettably, they split up just a few months following the broadcast of the finale. Recently, Thurston became engaged with Arcuri.
