Former NBC Exec Regrets Helping Market ‘The Apprentice’ in Op-Ed: “We Created a Monster”

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but draw parallels between the world of entertainment and the digital realm we inhabit. The tale of John D. Miller and his role in promoting Donald Trump’s show, “The Apprentice,” is a stark reminder of how our actions can have far-reaching consequences that we may not foresee.

This week, it was stated by former NBC marketing head, John D. Miller, in an opinion piece that he now wishes he had been involved in promoting “The Apprentice,” as he feels his actions contributed to unleashing a destructive force upon the world.

The Apprentice ran for 15 seasons from 2004 to 2017; Trump hosted the first 14 installments.

In a piece for U.S. News, Miller stated, “To make the series appealing, we spun a story that portrayed Trump as an incredibly prosperous businessman who enjoyed a life fit for royalty. This was the underlying theme of the show, but it was at least a significant overstatement, and at its worst, it constructed a misleading narrative, making him appear more successful than he actually was.

He further explained, “Trump admitted that he filed for business bankruptcy on four occasions prior to the show’s premiere, and at least twice more during his tenure as host. Notably, the grand boardroom where he famously dismissed contestants was a constructed set, as his actual boardroom was deemed too outdated and unkempt for television broadcast.

For a quarter of a century, Miller served as the head of marketing at both NBC and NBCUniversal within the NBC family. His responsibilities included overseeing the promotional efforts for the hit show, “The Apprentice”.

In a detailed editorial piece, Miller reminisced about aggressively advertising the program, creating countless short advertisements totaling thousands that propagated the notion of Donald Trump’s purported entrepreneurial abilities.

As a passionate supporter, I never thought our portrayal of Trump as a thriving entrepreneur would snowball into such a massive impact, blanketing America much like a heavy winter storm – a phenomenon that, in retrospect, could be compared to the “fake news” he frequently denounced.

Miller found that Trump’s past dealings showed he was both cunning and highly susceptible to being manipulated, with a seemingly bottomless pit for compliments. No matter how extravagant the praise, it was never enough for him.

World leaders, among them Vladimir Putin from Russia and Kim Jong Un of North Korea, have also come to this realization,” he added.

Miller further commented that promoting ‘The Apprentice’ had unfortunate consequences, as it misrepresented Trump as an accomplished leader, which is something he now regrets. He also expressed remorse for not speaking out sooner about this matter.

His message concluded with an encouragement to cast your vote for the Democratic party in the upcoming month. “For half a century, I’ve been skillfully marketing television wonders, turning small problems into big ones every day,” Miller penned. “However, I stand before my fellow citizens today, without any unnecessary hype: If you think Trump is better for you or the nation, that’s an illusion, similar to The Apprentice. Even if you are a lifelong Republican, like myself, I firmly recommend voting for Kamala Harris. The country will improve and so will you.
