Former Rockstar Dev Warns Players To Have Lower Expectations With GTA 6

As a longtime fan of the Grand Theft Auto series, I find the recent statements from Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar Games developer, both intriguing and somewhat disheartening. Having followed the evolution of GTA since its early days, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the technological leaps we witnessed between games like San Andreas and GTA 4.

Story Highlights

  • A former Rockstar Games dev has warned players to keep their expectations in check with GTA 6.
  • He clarifies that there won’t be a huge technological leap in GTA 6 compared to its predecessor.
  • The tech is not progressing as fast as before, as we saw in the GTA San Andreas To GTA 4 days.

In an interview on YouTube with SanInPlay, ex-Rockstar Games developer Obbe Vermeij advised players to temper their expectations regarding GTA 6. He contends that unlike previous games, there may not be a significant technological advancement in the next installment because of minimal progress in technology over time. Although the differences between consoles have shrunk, this does not imply that the upcoming game won’t live up to fan expectations.

Former Rockstar Dev Warns Players To Have Lower Expectations With GTA 6

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to admit, the anticipation for Rockstar’s next move is sky-high. But with their track record, there’s a good chance they’ll blow us away again with an utterly mind-blowing GTA 6. It’s not that I expect them to redefine gaming as we know it; rather, I’m banking on them raising the bar even higher, just like they always do.

Obbe Vermeij notes that the leap in technology between PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 was significant, while the difference between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 isn’t as noticeable. In other words, there wasn’t as much innovation required to make a substantial change when moving from PS4 to PS5 compared to the jump from PS1 to PS2.

Slow Technological Progress Means We’ll Only See Incremental Improvements In GTA 6

Regrettably, due to a gradual pace in technological advancements between console generations, it’s likely that GTA 6 won’t showcase the same revolutionary changes we’ve experienced in earlier GTA games. For instance, the leap from GTA San Andreas to GTA 4 was significant because technology was evolving swiftly. Therefore, we might observe more modest enhancements rather than groundbreaking ones in the upcoming game compared to its predecessor.

“The developer remarks that the leap from GTA 2 to GTA 3, as well as the one from San Andreas to GTA 4, were enormous. He doubts if such a significant improvement will be possible in future Grand Theft Auto games.”

To sum it up, it’s important to note that Obbe Vermeij is not associated with GTA 6 in any way. Although he significantly contributed to the development of the Grand Theft Auto series, he left Rockstar in 2009 after serving as a technical director. As a result, the upcoming installment might bring unexpected and significant changes, even for those who previously worked on the series.
