Former X-Men Star Responds to Not Getting a Call for Deadpool & Wolverine

As a long-time fan of the Marvel universe and someone who has witnessed the evolution of characters like Charles Xavier across multiple iterations, it’s always a thrill to see these beloved figures come to life on screen. The interconnectedness of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is truly a sight to behold, and the prospect of seeing James McAvoy reprise his role as Professor X in future MCU projects is nothing short of exhilarating.

The movie Deadpool & Wolverine is filled with countless appearances by popular Marvel characters who previously appeared in the X-Men films produced by Fox. Notably absent, however, is Charles Xavier, the iconic mentor of the X-Men, a role that has been portrayed on screen by both Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy. Stewart debuted as Professor X in 2000’s X-Men, while McAvoy took over the role in 2011’s X-Men: First Class. The two characters interacted in the 2014 film, X-Men: Days of Future Past. Given that the main antagonist of Deadpool & Wolverine, Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin), is Charles Xavier’s evil twin sister, fans anticipated a appearance by a version of Professor X. However, James McAvoy has explained why he did not appear in the film.

WARNING! Spoilers ahead for Deadpool & Wolverine!

2024 found me chatting with Variety at the San Diego Comic Con, discussing my upcoming film, “Speak No Evil.” When talk turned to the exciting prospect of a Deadpool & Wolverine movie, I was asked if I’d been approached for a cameo. Here’s the twist – despite what you might have heard, no one ever reached out to me about being part of that film!

“Initially, I thought I would make an appearance in the credits. However, it wasn’t as expected; I find it unlikely. If such a scenario ever existed where Xavier appeared, it seems they abandoned that concept well before discussing my involvement with them.”

James McAvoy Is Open to Playing Charles Xavier In the Future

Fans have been eagerly brainstorming and imagining their ideal X-Men film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since Disney gained control over the X-Men characters. However, an official X-Men movie within the MCU is yet to be confirmed by Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, as mutants are still relatively new additions to the universe.

If Kevin Feige eventually approves a new X-Men movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is a possibility that James McAvoy might take on the role of Charles Xavier once more. During an interview, McAvoy expressed that he doesn’t entirely dismiss the idea of reprising a character in the future. However, he has outlined specific conditions under which he would be open to returning to the role. As stated by McAvoy:

“I’m constantly drawn towards compelling roles and unique storytelling opportunities, whether they’re familiar or entirely fresh. If the material is of high quality, I’m always prepared to take part. However, it needs to be genuinely good, and there must be a genuine intention to create something exceptional. So while these possibilities are intriguing, they remain hypothetical for now.”

In the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine,” we have the first standalone film introducing characters previously owned by Fox; however, an X-Men character had made an appearance in the MCU before this movie. That distinction belongs to Beast, who was seen in “The Marvels.” During the post-credits scene, Kelsey Grammer reprised his role as Beast after Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) entered a parallel dimension that seems to house original X-Men characters. With Grammer’s return and considering the countless multi-verse escapades in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” it leaves room for James McAvoy to reappear as Professor X.
