‘Forms of the Shadow’ Finds the Silver-Lining of Our Shared Existence

As a globetrotting art enthusiast who has navigated the labyrinthine galleries of the world, I must say that the current exhibition at Vienna’s Korean Cultural Center, “Forms of the Shadow,” left an indelible mark on my heart. Curated by Sunjung Kim, this captivating display of sculptures, paintings, embroideries, and performances transcends geographical boundaries, offering a profound exploration of humanity’s shared journey through adversity and hope.

In Austria and South Korea, the Vienna Secession and Art Sonje Center are showcasing an intricate dance between light and darkness. The exhibition titled “Forms of the Shadow“, curated by Sunjung Kim, is a collective display featuring sculptures, paintings, embroideries, and performances. This show delves into mankind’s continuous voyage through hardship and optimism as it charts humanity’s enduring journey.

The exhibition showcases creations from 17 artists, inviting audiences to ponder unity during challenging periods. Ramiro Wong’s soft luggage and Jin-me Yoon’s multi-screen video art resonate with the outsider perspective, exploring historical strife between Eastern and Western cultures. Meanwhile, Janie Jin Kaison’s vibrant landscapes and Kyungah Ham’s ornate chandelier interject funeral settings with surprising moments of aesthetic grace. Throughout, there’s a sense of wistful optimism as the works confront reality directly, even when it’s difficult to accept.

The exhibition highlights the complexities of our common human journey. A prime example of this theme is Haegue Yang’s suspended blind installation that creates a dance of light on a darkened room floor. Just as light peeks through Yang’s blind slats, the exhibition subtly reminds us that even in darkness, there exists light.

Forms of the Shadow is now on view at Vienna’s Korean Cultural Center through November 17, 2024.
