It appears that Ian Goldberg, known for his work on “Fear the Walking Dead”, is set to assume the role of showrunner for the critically acclaimed Apple TV+ series “Foundation”, following David S. Goyer’s departure last year. As reported by Deadline, preparations are underway in the writers’ room for a potential Season 4, which could expand upon Isaac Asimov’s extensive space opera narrative, although a release date for the upcoming third season has yet to be confirmed.
Last February, Goyer withdrew from ‘Foundation’ prior to the resumption of its third season’s filming, due to budget disagreements for the opulent TV series. With Bill Bost now overseeing as executive producer, production cameras have been rolling again, aiming to complete Season 3 despite previous difficulties and delays in filming.
Goldberg assuming control for upcoming installments suggests that ‘Foundation’ may be back on its course. Additionally, it seems reassuring that Goldberg has prior experience with Goyer, having worked together on Syfy’s ‘Krypton’, a two-season Superman origin story, and co-writing two episodes of the ABC drama ‘FlashForward’, which was created by Goyer and Brannon Braga.
‘Foundation’ Looks Set to Return This Year
The opening acts of the TV series “Foundation” received high praise from both critics and audiences, boasting a 72% rating in its first season and a perfect 100% score in the second on Rotten Tomatoes. Yet, the climax of the second season left viewers eagerly anticipating more, which aired on September 15, 2023. Production for the third season commenced as early as May 2023; however, it was soon interrupted by the Hollywood strikes. After resuming and finally completing filming, this development was certainly welcome news to those eagerly awaiting the next chapter of the story.
The epic story Foundation follows a group of outcasts on their lengthy quest to preserve mankind and rebuild society following the collapse of the Galactic Empire. Adapting this intricate narrative into hour-long (or shorter) episodes is challenging, particularly since Season 2 delves even further into the plot. Interestingly, Goyer stated in an interview with MovieWeb that he found Season 2 easier to navigate than the first season.
In contrast to season one, season two felt less complex as it didn’t require extensive introduction or explanation of concepts such as genetic dynasty, psychohistory, and the Foundation. These elements were already established in previous episodes, allowing us to dive right into the action without having to lay the groundwork. This made progressing through season two feel more straightforward, almost like we were launched immediately.
The specific date for the third season of Foundation hasn’t been announced just yet, but with various elements falling into place and Goldberg joining the cast for upcoming episodes, it seems probable that we’ll see it air this year. As the threat posed by the powerful telepathic antagonist, “The Mule” (or as Lou Llobell’s Gaal Dornick refers to him, “the origin of the impending darkness”), is anticipated to play a significant role, the tension and stakes for this season are expected to escalate.
