As a lifelong music enthusiast who grew up with the Grateful Dead’s anthems echoing through my youth, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of nostalgia and admiration as I reflect on their Kennedy Center Honors. The energy that night, filled with fellow Deadheads like Miles Teller, Chloe Sveginy, and David Letterman, was palpable – it was as if we were all transported back to the days of grooving together at concerts, lost in the rhythm and melody.
At the conclusion of the Kennedy Center Honors event on Sunday, ‘Not Fade Away’ was played, mirroring how The Grateful Dead often ended their concerts for decades with Buddy Holly’s timeless song about enduring love.
The crowd gleefully danced in the aisles to the lively rhythm following an evening dedicated to honoring lifetimes of artistic achievement, with awards given to esteemed individuals such as director Francis Ford Coppola, jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, and singer-songwriter Bonnie Raitt. The historic Harlem theater, The Apollo, which has nurtured countless Black artists throughout the years, was also celebrated.
For decades, Deadheads like actors Miles Teller and Chloe Sveginy, along with talk show host David Letterman, have honored the band’s unique mix of musical exploration, endurance, and communal spirit. As Letterman declared, “Their music permeates the cosmos.
It was quite uncommon to bestow recognition upon The Apollo; it was the initial instance where the Kennedy Center decided to honor a particular performance stage.
Governor Wes Moore expressed the deep significance that the Apollo holds for many, as he gracefully stepped onto the red carpet,” is one way to paraphrase it in simpler language while maintaining the original sentiment. The governor’s reference to memorable performances by Lauryn Hill and a young Michael Jackson from the Apollo Theater served as cherished reminders of his past.
At the 90-year-old theater, known as The Apollo, a tribute was paid to its rich artistic heritage. Savion Glover danced an energetic tap dance number, while the musical duo The War and Treaty played a blend of songs originally sung by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Lastly, comedian Dave Chappelle shared his nerve-wracking story about his first performance at The Apollo when he was just 15 years old.
People began to jeer. It felt as if I were observing from somewhere else,” he expressed. Later, the ‘Sandman’, a well-known figure at the theater, escorted Chappelle offstage. However, he attributed this challenging encounter to aiding him in conquering his apprehension about bombing on stage.
Every year, I always look forward to attending the gala at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where we artists pay heartfelt tributes to each other through captivating performances and moving testimonials. On the customary Saturday evening, it’s an honor to receive a medallion during the ceremony held at the State Department – a moment I never forget.
To begin the evening’s series of homages, Emmylou Harris and Dave Matthews delivered a rendition of the duet between Bonnie Raitt and the late John Prine, titled “Angel From Montgomery.
Music icon Sheryl Crow honored Bonnie Raitt’s groundbreaking career, not only as a vocalist and lyricist, but also as an esteemed blues guitarist who shone brightly in a predominantly male profession.
Crow stated that he wouldn’t be pursuing his current path if he hadn’t witnessed Raitt’s performance at the age of 17. It was soon after this concert that he purchased his first guitar.
Raitt herself, on the pre-event red carpet, predicted an emotional evening.
“I’ve brought a massive box of Kleenex and my waterproof eye liner,” she laughed.
Coppola was honored at an event overflowing with past Kennedy Center laureates, such as Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, Al Pacino, and George Lucas. Each of them praised a groundbreaking and ambitious director who took delight in mentoring up-and-coming filmmakers.
Lucas remarked that Francis has a unique talent for leaping from heights,” he said. “Spending time with Francis makes you think you could leap from heights as well.
In Sandoval’s heartfelt homage, there were numerous performances given by an exceptional group of musicians, including Trombone Shorty and pianist Chucho Valdez, former members of Sandoval’s own band. Additionally, there was a captivating flamenco dance performance by Timo Nunez. To top it off, actor Andy Garcia added some witty humor to the event.
Arturo barely spoke any English upon arriving in America from Cuba many years back, according to Garcia,” he explained. “However, his English skills have significantly deteriorated since then.
The surprise performances dedicated to someone are usually hidden from the honorees themselves, as demonstrated in 2018 when Cyndi Lauper deceived her long-standing friend Cher by claiming she couldn’t make it. However, Lauper ultimately appeared on stage to perform Cher’s hit, “If I Could Turn Back Time.
During a pre-award ceremony at the White House, President Joe Biden commended every award recipient. Additionally, he called upon Robert De Niro, who was present, and said, “Should I find myself in a bind, I’ll be reaching out to you, old friend.
In the gathering, De Niro grinned and nodded, prompting laughter from attendees, even the honorees, seemingly due to a jest about his tough characters in films such as The Godfather. However, Biden was actually hinting at seeking De Niro’s counsel for guidance on future career paths post-presidency.
“Things are not looking good for February,” Biden joked.
At the Kennedy Center, Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were greeted with a prolonged applause upon their introduction. However, this might have been one of the final honorary events free from political drama for some time.
Throughout Donald Trump’s initial four years as president, Kennedy Center officials found themselves balancing the customary role of a president attending the event with the open disdain towards Trump expressed by several honorees. In 2017, one recipient named Norman Lear even considered boycotting his own ceremony if Trump were to attend. Interestingly, Trump chose not to attend any such ceremonies during his first term in office, starting from January onwards.
Last Sunday evening on the red carpet, several prominent Democrats appeared to extend gestures of peace or reconciliation.
“I hope he does come,” Moore said. “This is a wonderful celebration of genius in all its forms.”
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi added, “I think he would really enjoy it.”
The awards show will air on CBS on Dec. 22.
