As a longtime fan of the DC Universe and a proud parent, I must say that the new animated series, Creature Commandos, has certainly taken my fandom to a whole new level – or should I say, a more intimate one? The sex scenes were definitely an unexpected twist, especially considering they involve none other than Frank Grillo’s character, Rick Flag Sr.
The first two installments of the animated series “Creature Commandos” have been released, accessible to DC enthusiasts with a Max subscription. This marks the beginning of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU. Many viewers were eager to witness how Gunn’s style would shape this debut into a fresh comic book world. There are hints that “Creature Commandos” might be rated R, characterized by violence, profanity, adult themes, and sensuality – exactly what you’d expect when sending a squad of monsters to fight a witch in enemy territory. In the second episode, something unexpected was included: sex scenes, multiple ones.
And poor Frank Grillo had to watch one of them with his teenage son.
Frank Grillo joins James Gunn’s expanding universe in a significant role as Rick Flag Sr., the commander of Task Force M, set to appear in both Gunn’s upcoming 2025 film “Superman” and “Peacemaker” Season 2. However, we get our first glimpse of Flag in “Creature Commandos,” where he develops a mysterious connection with Princess Rostovic (Maria Bakalova), who will become the leader of Pokolistan. In Episode 2, there’s a tense confrontation between Flag and Rostovic in a bathroom scene, which Grillo himself describes as intense when discussing the audio recording process for this moment with TopMob.
In a rather awkward turn of events, I found myself reliving an intense moment, emphatically expressing my feelings with an imaginary limb, while Maria did the same. We were both caught up in our own worlds, writhing and letting out cries of joy, and it wasn’t exactly a walk in the park! It certainly wasn’t easy or comfortable, especially considering the audience of 10 onlookers in the booth.
It’s quite uncomfortable, really, to imagine our parents engaging in intimate moments, and that includes animated versions. So, James Gunn, it’s unfortunate that you’ve put Grillo’s son in a position where he must contemplate such a scenario. However, the scene serves a purpose: it demonstrates Flag’s susceptibility to manipulation, which could become significant as the story unfolds.
To date, the series “Creature Commandos” has been warmly accepted by both critics and enthusiasts alike. They concur that the narrative perfectly embodies Gunn’s knack for assembling a band of underdogs while infusing them with emotion. However, I doubt this style will remain consistent across other DCU projects. For instance, “Superman” is unlikely to incorporate sex scenes, in contrast to “Peacemaker.” This leaves one wondering if there might be sex scenes in future DCU productions, which would certainly make “Lanterns” intriguing.
