Frank Grillo Tells Us Why Marvel Has ‘Been In Trouble’ Lately, And Why Working With James Gunn At DC Feels So Different

I must admit, as someone who has been immersed in both the Marvel and DC universes, I can appreciate Frank Grillo‘s perspective. His experiences working with Marvel Studios and now DC Studios have given him a unique vantage point. It’s refreshing to see an actor like Grillo, who has played characters on both sides of the comic book battlefield, share his insights about the differences between the two studios.

As I journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I’ve noticed Frank Grillo portraying Brock Rumlow, or Crossbones, in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Civil War,” and “Avengers: Endgame.” He even lent his voice to the character for a few episodes of “What If…?”, but for all practical purposes, his MCU journey seems to have concluded. Now, on the brink of entering the DC Universe as Rick Flag Sr., Grillo shared with TopMob his views on why Marvel might be facing difficulties lately and what it’s been like working alongside DC Studios co-head James Gunn.

During my recent chat with Sean O’Connell during the press tour for the upcoming TV series, ‘Creature Commandos’, I shared some insights about the contrasting experiences of working at Marvel versus DC. Here’s what I had to express on that topic:

Indeed, that’s an intriguing query considering the challenges faced by others. It appears they ventured beyond their capabilities, metaphorically speaking. On the other hand, James and Peter Safran’s strategy of employing a single actor for both live-action and animation seems to foster consistency and character comprehension. However, what stands out most is Gunn’s ability to effectively incorporate these actors into each narrative. This approach seems less likely to result in an excessive number of characters that leave viewers wondering about their purpose. They’re taking a unique route. Time will tell if it pays off, but I can sense a distinction already.

It’s an interesting perspective, although I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention two things. One, Marvel Studios not working on animated projects when Frank Grillo came aboard, so having actors play characters in both live-action and animated forms wasn’t a concern. Two, it’s funny he’s talking about an “egregious number of people” considering that Grillo is part of the stacked cast of James Gunn’s Superman, as that upcoming DC movie doesn’t just include Man of Steel mainstays like Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, but also characters like Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific and Metamorpho.

Still, I see what Frank Grillo is getting at with talking about how James Gunn, who co-captains the DC Studios ship with producer Peter Safran, takes great care in making sure there’s a good reason to include characters in these DCU projects for story reasons rather than just because it’s an option to throw them in. Grillo also said the following about playing Brock Rumlow and how he currently feels about DC:

In that universe, I played a supporting role, perhaps even a minor one. Yet, merely being part of it and observing its developments, I truly believe that the potential for DC is boundless. Indeed, I genuinely feel this way.

In “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Rumlow served as a secondary villain at most, causing minor issues for the Avengers initially in “Captain America: Civil War” before being eliminated from the storyline. However, in an alternate timeline appearance in “Avengers: Endgame,” played by Grillo, he reprised his role from the Winter Soldier era. Regardless, critics have noted that Rumlow’s character lacked depth. On the other hand, Rick Flag Sr. is expected to play a more prominent role as a supporting character within the DC Universe, and Grillo anticipates positive developments for this franchise in the future.

Following his lively first appearance as Rick Flag Sr., portrayed by Frank Grillo, in the animated series Creature Commandos, he will step into the role for real in the upcoming movie Superman, set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Subsequently, you’ll see him again in Season 2 of Peacemaker, tentatively scheduled to premiere around August on the 2025 TV calendar.
