Warner Bros. Studios made significant changes in their lineup of upcoming films yesterday, which has disappointingly delayed the release of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride” to 2026. Originally scheduled for October 3, 2025, the film starring Christian Bale as Frankenstein‘s monster was then moved up to September 26. However, Variety reports that the movie will now not be released until March 6, 2026.
1930s Chicago serves as the backdrop for “The Bride!“, a fusion of musical and horror genres. In this tale, Frankenstein enlists Dr. Euphronius to aid in crafting a companion. Their joint effort results in the creation of a woman who was once murdered, now known as the Bride. This leads to a blossoming romance, piqued police interest, and significant societal upheaval. The film boasts an impressive cast including Jessie Buckley (known from Chernobyl and Fargo) as the lead character, along with Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, and Annette Bening.
Jake Gyllenhaal, an accomplished actress, is stepping into the director’s chair for the first time with ‘The Bride!’ after her successful debut in 2021’s psychological drama ‘The Lost Daughter’. This film received critical acclaim, numerous awards, and boasts a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, ‘The Bride!’, with reported production costs nearing $100 million, has caused some controversy during early screenings, as some within the film’s production have criticized the allocation of funds, stating it was “irresponsible” to give Gyllenhaal more than $15 million for the project.
‘The Bride!’ Is Being Moved to 2026 Because of Guillermo del Toro
It’s been suggested by some that the delay in the release of “The Bride!” is due to disappointing test screenings. However, industry insiders assert that this isn’t the reason. Instead, they believe the delay is because director Guillermo del Toro is set to unveil his own adaptation of “Frankenstein“, featuring Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi, later this year. The much-anticipated Gothic sci-fi horror film is scheduled for release on Netflix in November. Warner Bros., it seems, are concerned that releasing “The Bride!” so close to del Toro’s movie might negatively impact their own film’s success, as they think the focus will primarily be on del Toro’s production, not theirs.
According to sources within the industry, these same insiders think that March would be a more suitable release date for “The Bride!“. This is because Warner Bros.’ major releases have previously performed well during this month. For instance, films like “Dune” and Legendary’s “Monsterverse” (which Warner Bros. distributes) have had success with their March premieres in the past. So, it is hoped that “The Bride!” will also experience a similar box office success if released in March.
Time will reveal the truth, but it’s hard not to feel skeptical after the disappointing test screenings for The Bride. Could it possibly require reshoots now that it has more time in post-production? Only time will tell. In the interim, I highly recommend watching James Whale’s 1935 film, Bride of Frankenstein, which is easily accessible for rent or purchase on all video-on-demand platforms.
